Whatever the day.

Spring Break at the beach

This morning when I was helping out in Grayson's classroom and I thought no one was looking I buried my nose in a Reader, hardback and big pages. It smelled just like second grade.

Spring Break at the beach

Spring Break at the beach

The other day I was remembering about that first meal after giving birth, or really, more the hunger. There's nothing like it. With the boys in the hospital I always ordered French toast and bacon. With Ivy at home I think I ate beer bread and spinach dip and then that first week, never forget the casseroles. All this moving has made me ravenous.

Spring Break at the beach

We've been here two months now. I almost can't believe that. It feels like a lifetime! In the best way, I mean, look at these photos. And it's April four, again, and I've come to the place now almost three years to the day, rushing in between school pick up and baseball practice to gather all four at the ocean wayside, wind and rain whipping around and risking all papers and drive-up coffee receipts blowing out as soon as the car doors open. And I was like, I can not  force this. And it's totally okay. There are better photos still on the camera from last week and they don't give a care about the date.

March FOUR

Port Orford

We are enjoying life on the 101 and decided to just get in the car and take it south. It was a beautiful day, and this place might never cease to amaze me.

In the Redwood forest, just 2 hours down the 101.

March FOUR
To the east- trees and more trees.

Same spot, to the west, an ocean that goes on forever.

February FOUR

February FOUR 2013

All four had school today- their first day here. They did great. Noah & Carter go to the same school, Gray's is just next door, and Ivy's is around the corner.

Ivy and I ran a few errands after I picked her up and then we came back to the hotel and totally zonked out until the boys' bus came. She was still sleeping after five and I was afraid I'd finally have to miss a fourth of the month photo, but we got the shot in time.

They are standing in the middle of our street in front of our new house and just beyond there behind them is the great and mighty Pacific Ocean.

Oh, and remember just one month ago?

January FOUR

January FOUR

Gray couldn't put down his iPod because he was slaying dragons or something and that sounded pretty serious, so.

I left my heart at the ocean and my laptop in Indiana. But, now all is well. It's official. Jeff has been named the Publisher of The World newspaper in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Seriously. I am proud of him beyond words, and happy. So happy that it's numbed my brain from thinking about moving again, and thousands of miles away at that, and how I really felt at first.

We were out there last weekend by the beautiful Pacific and trees, so many trees, to home-shop and fall in love with the area. Now we're just getting all our houses in order... we close on the Indiana one this month, yay! and might just have our eye on a little lodge in the woods in Oregon where all you can see is trees, and more trees, and the water.

JanFour

It's January 2013 and we are far from the lice incident of last winter, and of thinking we'd never move anywhere, ever. This has been such a wonderful surprise.

December FOUR

kids holiday 2012

I won the kid lottery. Four times.

I realized today that I am one of those moms who thinks her kids are perfect. I do. Because they give me so much reason to believe it. They are like masterpieces. I am in awe.

November FOUR

November FOUR 2012

We are getting closer to an offer on our house. Ivy starts preschool tomorrow, and the classroom is like the Wonder Pets- complete with gerbils and things in it that I remember when I was a little girl. I'm so glad for this. Her teacher has been teaching a long long time and has never had an Ivy in her class before. Also, she lives on Ivy St. But of course!

I will have four kids at four different schools at the same time... I don't know what my heart will think, such a scatter, but I feel surprisingly okay about it.

November FOUR 2012

We found a church we like, it's nice to have a place to land for the holidays, and hopefully beyond that.

Every other week since we moved we've been trying out new pizza places and breakfast spots and I love how confident and adventurous the kids (and okay me, too) are getting with their orders, and it all feels so splurgey, and it's super fun.

I am really really thankful and happy right now, November 2012.

October FOUR

October FOUR 2012

I wanted trees. Now we have leaves... lots and lots of tiny leaves.

In our backyard at any given moment you'll see a chipmunk or two, sometimes begging with his white belly sticking out by our back French doors. They are finicky little fellows, leaving the unsalted peanuts for the giant squirrels and a humongous blue jay. They much prefer the trail mix I get from Target, especially the almonds and cashews. Gray said when we move he's going to leave a trail so they follow us to our new home. I'm already envisioning myself coming back here to feed them.

Noah is the first one up every morning, around six, and I crumple out of bed a little after to hang out with him before he gets on the bus. It's dark dark out and I open the blinds and put away dishes and sweep. After he leaves I'll get out my laptop and wait for the others to wake and get breakfast. Carter gets on the bus an hour and a half  later - he'll say goodbye and Ivy will yell "Kiss!" and he'll run to find her and smooch her on the cheek and then dash out as the bus drives down our road. Every morning.

Gray heads out fifteen minutes after that (and after we tussle about wearing socksshoesjacketsnackwhere'syourbackpack?) and I watch him through the window and he waves and I wave and then he piddles around and then waves and I wave back, again and again. Then I throw some nuts on the deck and visit with my little friends as they stuff their chubby faces. They are much too fast for my camera, so far.

I'll tell Ivy to put on some pants and today she declared that she didn't want to wear pants. "I just want to wear legs." We run errands and snuggle a lot, and lately she will even pretend to be back in my belly, under a blanket on my lap and everything. Or she'll beg me to have another baby, and I'll tell her I'm sorry but that's not going to happen. I still feel like we missed our window to give her a baby sister or brother to play with, but then I just think about something else...

This week I've been knitting and watching all the Listen To Your Mother shows or a movie or I take my chair outside while Ivy digs or climbs trees or puts water in little bowls to feed the acorns and fills cups with dandelions.

When everyone gets home I hear a lot of... "Mom where is... (something they want to play with but didn't make it in the move- a castle, car, board game)" and I'll say "Get a box from the basement. Make a new one!" They don't ask as much anymore. Then I send them outside.

Gray has the most homework, and he reads aloud while I make dinner or knit. After that we kind of just chill and straighten up from the day, and sign all the school papers and fliers and fundraisers and sign ups from three different schools, and get ready for tomorrow. I start my day because of them, and it finally comes to a slow and sleepy stop because of them.

September FOUR

September FOUR
(our new backyard)

How it can be September, I just don't know. We've been officially moved for two whole weeks, and the six-fifteen wake ups have not set in. I still blink blurry-eyed and confused, like it's the middle of the night (because it kind of is) and like did someone have a bad dream? Go back to bed? No, it's time to get up. I try to get Noah to sleep-in five minutes longer every morning but I seriously think he gets up earlier. My latest offer is to just drive him to school. We'd probably get a good half hour more of sleep. We'll see.

My mom and Mommal came for a visit this weekend and it felt like they were here maybe a minute. Everything felt just slightly out of place- our new house, them here, trying to make the most of their time but not really doing anything at all. I wish we could have done more, wish we would have done less. We made quick trips here or there, nothing big or leisurely, including a drive to look at some shabby chic furniture I wanted only to find the store closed but then down the road there was a dresser put out for trash. We totally hauled it into the truck. It even had clothes in it. Yes we took those, too.

They were our first visitors. And within hours of their arrival Jeff and I drove off to find a Sephora and a little dinner in Akron (cucumber martini, Gouda stuffed dates, spicy baked goat cheese and marinara, tomato and artichoke soup.) I felt so guilty leaving but so thankful we had someone here who loved the kids. She also made pans of burritos to freeze. Thank you, Mom!

Not everything is sunlight through stained glass windows here- but I am still terribly upbeat about it all- I almost annoy myself. Our washer and dryer stopped working- at the same time- and I think it's a fuse but now we decide if we should call the rental maintenance or just our own handyman. I didn't mind driving up to the laundromat yesterday afternoon because I had a book to read so I practically darted out the door. I was surprised by how crowded it was, and the wide variety of people- some who looked like maybe their washer and dryer just broke, too, or college kids, and then others who looked so down on their luck, but we all sat there with our unmentionables making the same kaleidoscope swirls around the glass in unison.

And this morning- I just went to the garage to fill my iced coffee from the big jug in the fridge and I think now the fridge and freezer are out, too. But we have a house! We are here. We are here. I am so glad we are here.

P.S. we still have a house there, so very there, and it's for sale if you know anyone looking.

July FOUR: Swimsuit Edition

JULY FOUR

I thought it would be a good time to check in with the kids and ask them what they want to do when they grow up.

Noah: "I don't know." (Kicks dirt, gets kinda grumpy about it.) (He's 11.)
Carter: "A professional baseball player."
Gray: "PALEONTOLOGIST." And at the amount of dinosaur books we read, he can be one really soon.
Ivy: "Do dishes. Or be a dancer I guess. And artist."

There you have it. How do you celebrate the 4th of July? It's so hot here that we are missing the parade today, but we will be having an awesome cookout and fireworks tonight!

Happy fourth!

MAY THE FOURTH

MAYFOURTH
MAY FOUR 2012: Ivy's lopsided 'do, Gray mid-sneeze aka apparently allergic to lilacs now, too.

I was out with my girls last night and unfortunately while I was away and Noah was in charge for all of five minutes Ivy took the scissors to her locks... to be freshened up professionally later today... and fortunately Jeff interviewed the four on Ways to Listen To Your Mother and Consider Her Feelings, all of which are answers totally thought up by the kids and I'm proud to present to you:

Ways to Listen to Your Mother
and Consider Her Feelings

Don't annoy her
Don't bother her while she's cooking
Don't wake her up unless it's an emergency
If she is resting, stay quiet
Don't insult her cooking
Don't fight over her iPhone
Listen to her the first time
Don't beg her to do something
Pay attention if she's talking
If she tries to wipe your nose, let her
Don't interrupt her while she's shooting videos
Nobody scream, nobody talk, and nobody snore
Get dressed on time
Don't argue about your homework
Try and keep my room clean no matter how many times stuffed animals spill out of Gray's bed
Never put your finger in a cupcake
Don't mess up her pillows
Make her happy
Give her art presents from school
When you are at a restaurant, do not goof around
If she tells you she wants to take a picture with you, don't grunt or groan
Go to bed
Give her kisses
Don't ask her for doughnuts, because she'll get doughnuts if she wants to
When she's going to the bathroom, never knock on the door
Don't be rowdy
Don't spend too much time on TV or iPods, especially at night

Listen To Your Mother Northwest Indiana is next Thursday May 10 at 7 PM at the Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso. I hope to see you there!

This guy.

We're doing no-TV again and so his brothers beg him to read the comics to us one more time? I overheard him reading the Children's Bible to Ivy after they were supposed to be asleep but I didn't say anything, because The Bible.

These two.

There's a bond there that in a weak moment I might just admit I am jealous, the way she looks at him and the way he responds to her.

Three.

During the recent hot spell, I was scrambling for warm weather clothes for the kids and went through a stack of hand-me-downs for Gray. He- the it's too shirty child - examined one of Carter's old tops with a collar and buttons and said so matter of factly "I'm going to have to start getting used to tags." And he put it in the keep pile.

Four Unhappy Children

MARCHFOUR 1

It's the fourth of the month and I take pictures. I thought about waiting until they had their church clothes on but usually once everyone is ready we are late and running out the door. You know the drill.

MARCHFOUR 3

I woke to Gray screaming because Carter beat him to the toaster and he had to wait for his waffle oh em gee. And then he fell on the floor because Noah touched his arm.

MARCHFOUR 4

I opened the curtain to bring in more light and they were all EYES! BRIGHT! AHH! and then I was done.

The Feb Four

FEB FOUR

Welp, this month's photos was a task. The kids did not want to strike a pose. At all. We went to the beach because the weather here has been so unseasonably warm and I'm not sure we'll be able to say we went there the first week of February ever again. The foggy sky against the water was mind blowing amazing. So much so that my camera refused to even hardly take a photo, and soon we lost light, but that was okay. It was beautiful.

January FOUR

getting ready for the picture

I almost missed it by a day again. Totally thought yesterday was the second. But we made it. It's the January Four!

Cheshire cat
I love this one even though it looks like Noah's head is growing out of Carter's shoulder.

Pretend to be sad

So to get them to loosen up sometimes I prompt them to make a silly face or think about ice cream or something like that. Here I said to act like they were sad. They totally committed to the part!

January FOUR part deux

I think this is when I begged, "Smile like you love your mom!" and then Ivy must have thought I said pose like you're mom. And Gray? Well, that's Gray.

I've been hearing with the new year that some of you are also posting monthly photos of your kids, which is wonderful. Please link up in the comments so we all can visit, too!

December FOUR

DECEMBER FOUR

At church this morning Ivy took off her coat and the dress she was wearing was exceptionally poofy. Jeff said, "Oh, I thought you knew." I lifted it up to find that she'd worn a red and green Christmas tutu underneath. Of course when she got home, she changed into her casual & comfy pink tutu.

I took Noah shopping for his school choir concert. He even got new shoes. And I discovered that he is a whole size bigger than he was, like, last month. Size 3. My baby wears SIZE THREE.

Movember FOUR

MOVEMBER FOUR

So, apparently November is now called Movember - where men are encouraged to start the month clean shaven and grow & groom a wicked awesome 'stache while raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer and other male cancers. I bear no affiliation with Movember but do share the love of a fun moustache. I picked up a pack of four at Lifestyles downtown in case we were in need of a last minute costume idea and forgot about them until yesterday!

MOVEMBER

I'm so frustrated that my camera was on the wrong setting and I didn't realize it until later, but ah well. These photos make me LAUGH.

October FOUR

I've been looking for new drinking glasses for a while now, and finally just bought the ones I'd really been wanting at Target. Ivy of coursed dibbed Wonder Woman right away, then the boys grabbed the one they wanted and miraculously they each wanted a character that no one else claimed. Happy happy.

Also- a look at last October.

I'm also chatting about my little fourth month photo tradition at 4 Kids or More today. How do you keep track? Do share!
