Working in the third world and watching five year olds that weigh 18 pound die of malnutrition --- then even hearing about this HORRID annual tradition on Oprah's show -- makes me feel sick.

What vast prosperity should do is feed and clothe children --- NOT give away copious amounts of over the top shit to people who DO NOT NEED IT.

AMEN! I amdoing a Beth Moore study on Daniel and it talks about how easily distracted we are by EXCESS and we have to purposely vaccinate ourselves against getting too caught up in worldly things. I stopped watching Oprah about a year ago once she really went off the deep end and was doing the whole "A New Erth" or whatever thing - it is like she started a church or something!

Amen! We don't have a television in our house, but stay pretty up to date on things via our internet connection. It's nice to keep tabs on what's happening in the world without the commercials pounding me over the head with what I "need".

Three years ago I had the brand new SUV, the posh life in the nicest suburb in our area, the shoe collection always growing thanks to Zappos, more clothes than two closets could hold, weekly shopping sprees, a nice paycheck, etc. But then I got married, moved to a new country, and gave it all up for a husband who loves Jesus and me incredibly, an old VW that runs most of the time, thrift stores run by Mennonites, a fledgling wilderness ministry, and a free ticket out of the rat race. While I don't know the latest color OPI has out this season, and my curling iron feels abandoned, I'm one happy woman. Geez, even my self-esteem and my opinion on my hips is healthier now that I'm away from media telling me what I "need" and what I should look or be like. It's awesomely freeing!

What's even better is that our holiday celebrations have become more precious and meaningful than ever, which is funny to me since I have to create everything without the benefit of a paycheck of my own.

I never would have imagined that this would be possible to say. Sometimes it is hard not having money, but most of the time it forces me to be creative and use ingenuity that makes life very fun indeed.

I must admit it is easy for me to get sidetracked for all the wants for me and my family--I try to remember the true reason for the season, and look for ways to be in the giving spirit not only during this season, but as a daily part of life. Well, I haven't watched it, but I must say that I've been in this place for quite a few years with her and that show and all the materialism. It's INSANE. And pointless.

It's about JESUS, people!!!! How far our world has moved from the true meaning. It truly grieves my heart when I look around and see how many people are missing it....not just at this time of the year but in everyday life.

I totally agree. It's hard to get out of an excessive gift-giving-and-receiving habit if that's all you've ever really had, but I'd like to think I make a little bit of progress each year in shedding just a bit of that materialism. And it feels so GOOD when I come up with an awesome, inexpensive, non-wasteful personalized gift that not only shows my love for the recipient, but also truly touches them.

I haven't seen the show but I trust your judgment Steph. I'm so overwhelmed by the STUFF factor. I've actually been discussing with my 4yo the concept that this Christmas we'll just do maybe 1-2 presents from mom and dad and otherwise divert our efforts to those less fortunate, whether it's working in a soup kitchen, helping with food drives, or buying "gifts" for others. By quoting the latter, I'm referring to our day care's annual gift drive for needy families. Last year, the requests were for things like dish drainers, clean towels, a warm coat for a child, etc. It made me both want to weep, and give everything we could possibly give.

AMEN sister!! I could not agree with you more. NO ONE can afford that kind of stuff that I know here in DC - and if they COULD afford it, they are not buying it. They are too busy looking through World Vision's gift catalog and buy goats and seeds for folks in countries that could not fathom the kind of excessiveness that we live in here.

THANK YOU. What a breath of fresh air. (Btw - the most babywearers that I ever saw in one place was in Uganda this summer = happiest babies too!)
