Turning 37

First of all, it was just last week or so that I realized I would be turning 37 and not 38. For some reason I felt like I already was 37 all last year. So, in my head, I get a bonus year!

Because we celebrated my birthday early in Seattle, the only evidence of my actual birthday was on Facebook in the many well wishes on my timeline. Otherwise it was just a regular day.

Did school drop-off as normal, worked, and piddled around the house nothing special. My two best friends here swooped in and took me out to lunch and dessert (my very first drinking chocolate!) and then there was grocery shopping (two trips) and school pick up time. I made BLTs for the kids (their request) and bought mini cupcakes for them to eat because even though I don't like cake I felt like there just needed to be some sort of cake. In the evening I Skyped with my parents before I had to get to play practice.

I definitely noticed the monotony of my special day but also felt so proud of just what normal and ordinary means for me now. This family of six is grand, and so happy. I have a job I adore, friends in this new place who "get me", and I'm doing theater again... something my 16 year old self would be hoping I'd still be doing at this age. And actually I think back to my little girl self a lot lately and look at my life right now and hope it all fits into her big dreams. I think it does. That's a really fabulous feeling, and a great start to another really great year.

  1. Happy birthday!!!!! And btw for the last couple year I forgot my own birthday, worst is when people asks me how old I am... I have to think for a min and often told them the years I was born and tell them to figure it our because I can;'t remember lol

  2. Happy Birthday! I will turn 37 this August and often have to do the math or ask my 7 year old how old I am! Sometimes, I have to remind myself that I'm not 20 anymore!

  4. So good to have friends who get you. I can only hope our move to Dallas is as refreshing to us as your move to Oregon has been for you. Happy birthday, friend.

  5. Happy birthday! I just turned 37, too, and so far it seems like a pretty good one, as far as ages go. Enjoy your bonus year!

  6. I have conveniently blocked my age from my mind. I don't want to do the maths. So I don't bother. :)

  8. This line made me smile: "something my 16 year old self would be hoping I'd still be doing at this age". I bet your 16 y/o self would be proud of your 37 y/o self. Just a hunch. Happy belated, friend. Things had been so quite here for awhile so I hadn't checked in. Does the three posts in the new year equate to your triumphant return? {selfishly hopeful}

  10. Your ordinary day sounds wonderful... especially the part about having friends who get you, and doing work you love. I had been bumping my age up too... but later this year I'll turn 40, so I suddenly stopped doing that. :)

  11. So glad you have friends that you can relate to and are so happy. It's nice to know that you are younger than you thought...that happens to me a lot!

  12. The only better gift than "happy" is the ability to recognize it when it happens !! xoxoxo

  13. Happy Birthday love ! I've always celebrated big for my birthday, but I remember when my daughter was little I was in America over my birthday and I got a wonderful bunch of flowers and that was about it. It was lovely, but I then kept forgetting I had had a birthday and kept telling people I was the wrong age haha. I do like to celebrate the turn of a year with a big bang. Ehh just an excuse to get all my friends to together and have a party :) :)

  14. I think you had a lovely, extended birthday. Just think you didn't have to spend it moving cross country and the move to Bandon, OR turned out to be just what you would have ordered. By the way one of those FB things to calculate "mental age" said that mine is 37. If you switch the digits you'll get what my real age will be in March. But I'll take a mental age of 37....

  15. Happy belated birthday! There is no better feeling than feeling content with where life has taken you, I think there's very few people who actually get that feeling and are always chasing 'more'! Great blog.
