Six More Days

Gray swings

I can't wait for the kids to be out of school remind me of this in three weeks, I said breathlessly to Jeff as we walked to the side of the house to retrieve the three baseballs that went over the fence.

Six more days of school and mostly I'm looking forward to no morning rush. I just sighed so big. (And literally again when I re-read this.) No more frantic scramble because Gray can't find any socks or "long-sleeved" pants and do you have your backpack packed. I am not going to commit to anything before ten in the morning all summer long.

Walks downtown to the library and park days and splash pads and I've got a stack of books to read. I bought a lemonade stand for Carter on Zulily today, and a pack of Mad Libs. We have a tiny blow-up pool to fill and the garage freezer is at the ready for bulk boxes of freeze-pops. I said I was going to set boundaries for the neighbor kids but knowing me, I probably won't. We are going to have fun. I'll be prepared to feed an extra kid or three. I can't wait.

Remind me of this in about three weeks.

(And let me get nostalgic here: Gray swinging summer of 2006.)

  1. I wrote such a similar thing today! I'm ready for summer but I know the day will come all too soon when I'm going crazy and wishing we had school every day. ;) I need to stock the freezer too. I have a love/hate with having kids over. I want to know what is going on and I want to be the house the kids like to be at, but I also don't love some of the neighbor kids and their behaviors. Also, they seem not to know how to handle/interact with my little kids. I hope your summer is all you want it to be!

  2. We're into the second week of no school for Nick. I'm slowly getting used to it again. Though there's no sleeping in, cause don't you know, now he wants to get up early.

  3. Yep. But, I won't need a reminder in 3 weeks. It will take about 48 hours and I'll want to send them back ;)

I'm looking forward to the no rushing thing, too - I need it for a while.

  4. We've been out two weeks and it's been (mostly) great. Except that part where all six of us were crammed in one small cruise cabin for a week and drove each other insane and didn't sleep a wink. But mostly...mostly it has been great. I'm ready to back to our not-scheduled-but-routine routine.

  5. It's funny to read this because my summers are the SAME as the rest of the year....no school-aged kids yet. Wonder how I'll feel in a few years.

  7. Girl, we're homeschoolers and I STILL am thrilled it's summer vacation! I cannot imagine having to get all of my kids up every day to go to school. Gah...

  8. I hear you Steph, I am ready to sleep late and go on vacation! Summer is such a great time of the year ( minus the various insect bites and sweltering heat). And, my goodness Bridget, you guys have been out for TWO WEEKS ALREADY?? Lucky you!

  10. You make me smile. I just watched your video on what songs you rock out too. I can see you dancing around your kitchen, jamming out to rap, and washing dishes.

  11. Summer is when I always consider whether I should start staying home with the kids or working part time. But, this is our first year of morning camp for our almost 4 year old and we just received the information... The packing of a swim suit, towel, extra clothes, application of sunscreen, and labeling of absolutely everything has totally put me over the edge. Much worse than getting him ready for preschool!

  12. Ack! The morning rush is something I dread with every sunrise.

  13. Oddly, I'm not looking forward to the end of school. While I love the slower pace, my wee ones thrive on structure. Oh, and we have summer school for 4 weeks that starts at 8am ;) We're so going to have fun and hang out and relax though. That is a definite beauty of summer. Enjoy yours!

  16. That's so funny you wrote about stocking the freezer. I grew up on a farm, but my husband grew up in Chicago. He talks about knowing which parents had the best treats in their freezers and how they'd walk right into the house/ garage and help themselves. I just couldn't imagine that, but it must be real. You're talking about it, too.

  17. This is so me right now. I can't wait for summer and the winding down of commitments and packing lunches. Bring on the neighborhood! And yes, sanity check in 3 weeks.

  18. This is my favorite time of the year. I don't want summer to end and my daughter to go back to school because we have too much fun!

  19. I have always loved planning summer fun with my son. There's something about trying to create special summer memories that I just live for! When he was younger, I used to keep his own calendar on the fridge and he would be so excited to check it everyday to see what we were doing...even if it was only a fun art project or baking a cake at home. I recently saw a cute idea in the Family Fun magazine where you put up a string with clothespins and add all the dates of the month on each one. Then, you clip photos or tickets of things you'll be doing to each clip. Once you finish the activity, you can clip on a memento...like a ticket stub or a feather you found at the beach...whatever. :) Now that Jake is almost 13, I don't go to those lengths...even though I want to...mainly because I miss it. :) Enjoy!!
