Pecans and lice

Origami flower

So, Friday night was pretty uneventful until...

Carter ate a cookie that we believed had walnuts in it (but later found out was pecans) and soon his throat and ears were itchy, and despite giving him Benadryl, he was getting worse. His eyes were red, throat closing in, and he had trouble breathing. I dashed off to the ER and there was a line at the registration desk. Thankfully a couple EMTs were wheeling in a lady in front of me and they pushed us to the front, and actually we never signed in - they started treating him immediately. Poor thing had to have a shot and an IV. And he's okay. (And yes we now have Epi-pens.) Such a relief until...

I discovered he had lice.

Friends, I'm so tired. And I had a good cry on Christmas Eve in my parents' kitchen. But Christmas was really awesome anyway. I was in the ER and it wasn't for seizures. That's how I measure a lot of things. My friend finally came home with her daughter Phoenix on Friday night. She had surgery last week and can now see out of one eye. Pecans and lice are nothing.

The sun is shining. It's so strange to have a warm and not-white holiday, but I'll take it with great thankfulness.

This is my last week writing at Babble, part of my better direction for the New Year, and I've shared scenes from our Christmas morning there.

  1. If I could wrap you in a hug right now, I would. God loves you, baby girl. He sees what you do every day and is proud of the mother, wife, friend, daughter, and woman you are.

    Be blessed!

  3. Oh, my dear, I'm so sorry! I'm so glad to hear that Carter is ok and that you guys had a great Christmas. As for the lice, oh, that is my personal fear! I've had lice at least five times growing up. With long, thick hair it is a nightmare. In high school I volunteered at a homeless shelter and I loved playing with the kids, but I'm sure my mom HATED that every time we got rid of the lice it wouldn't be long before I got it again. My head itches just thinking about it and I'm not looking forward to the day one of my kids comes home with it. :)

I totally agree with you....a little perspective is all we need sometimes to see that what we're dealing with isn't as big of a deal as we originally thought.

  4. Oh, honey. We had lice once this summer and again this fall when it rampaged through the boys school. I have tips and tricks to share if you ever need them again. ;) I always meant to write a post about it, but never got around to it....

Anyway, sometimes you just have to cry. If anything deserves crying over, it's having four kids and discovering lice in the family....

Love you. Glad Carter was Ok. xoxo

  5. Oh, bless. That's just WRONG. Head lice on Christmas Eve and an ER visit. I was thinking of you all day on Christmas Day, wondering how everyone was feeling. Glad to hear all is well! But sorry to hear you're not going to be on Babble any longer. I mean, I get it but I am not that into that site and yours was the only one or two that I read regularly.

  6. Oh, man. A trip to the ER and lice. Double bummer.

I'm glad your sweet boy is ok. Somehow we have managed to avoid lice. I think it's because my boy frequently forgets to wash his hair when he showers. Those creepy-crawlers just love squeaky clean hair. Hang in there.

  7. I am glad you were able to have perspective, in comparison to seizures and cancer. However, it's never the big things that tear us down - it's the daily little things that make us feel like "I just can't do this any more." Good for you for the good cry. You are such a good mom, Steph, walnuts, lice, tears, and all. I'm so glad Carter is feeling better.

And don't forget to wash all of the stuffed animals... (scratches head)

  9. So glad that Carter is going to be okay. I also appreciate the update on Phoenix. They have been in my prayers often and I have been meaning to email you for an update. We also had a Christmas morning ER visit with Mr. Gabe, but still so thankful for how much better it is than it could be. Here's to the new year!

  14. Several years ago, while curling my daughter's hair on CHRISTMAS MORNING, I discovered lice. Those pesky little creatures like to show up at the BEST MOMENTS.

    Happy New Year! :)

  15. Whew! I'm glad the ER visit turned out okay. I'm glad you allowed yourself a good cry too. It's not good to hold it all in.

PS - Are you going to post about your direction for New Year's? Yours were the only posts I read on Babble.

  17. So glad he's okay! What a stressful day/evening!
(And I thought you already had EpiPens b/c wasn't one of yours (was it Carter?) previously diagnosed with food allergies?) I am always impressed by your eating out posts (though I realize that's not an every day occurrence for your fam, or even weekly I'm sure), just because we are still a little gun-shy about going to restaurants with Georgia's allergy concerns always weighing heavily on our minds.
Merry belated Christmas, and happy New Year!

  19. Just popping in to say that I love your posts and, unforgivably, hardly ever click over from Google reader to comment. Thank you for your honest, uplifting and always just wanted I needed to hear words.

You are so inspiring in all your real-mama-at-work glory.
