The Accent Vlog

(I know I'm sideways in the screen capture- anyone know how to fix that?)

So, I have been meaning to do one of these accent videos for a while now and thought now would be good timing because in the coming weeks I'm going to be vlogging more frequently and doing some exciting (for me) projects with video, so, here goes! See "rules" below:

Say the following words:
Aunt, route, wash, oil, theatre, iron, salmon, caramel, fire, water, sure, data, ruin, crayon, toilet, New Orleans, pecan, both, again, probably, spitting image, Alabama, lawyer, coupon, mayonnaise, syrup, pajamas, caught.

And answer the following questions:
What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
What is the bug that curls into a ball when you touch it?
What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
What do you call gym shoes?
What do you say to address a group of people?
What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
What do you call your grandparents?
What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
What is the thing you use to change the TV channel?

(I must give a nod to Roxanna because her tweet about this finally got me in gear, leading me to Nothing But Bonfires for the rules!)

Have you done an accent vlog? Will you post one now? Please leave a link in the comments below!

  1. This is funny as I know I say a lot of those things differently from everyone else round here and with Alister learning to talk more and more it is becoming more obviously, especially as people laughed at me at his party yesterday when I asked him if he want to take off his jumper (sweater).
A really embarrassing story... I have become so used to English/American accents that last year when ordering his birthday cake I didn't even notice that the lady I was ordering from had a really strong Northern English accent until we were leaving!

  2. Awesome~ Looking forward to more vlogs.

  3. Oh, I miss seeing your cute face in person.

  4. funny :) i did this a year or so ago - http://dreawood.com/2011/02/vlog-do-i-have-an-accent/

I dont hear much of an accent from you :)

and I said your name right! ;-)

  5. To this Texan you say Pecan funny, and lawyer like a Southerner.

I did this same vlog last week. Here is the link to mine.

  6. OMG! You and I could totally be friends -- you're so sweet! Thanks for encouraging me to do it. This was fun. So glad you'll be vlogging more often :)

  7. Oh these are so fun! I did mine here: http://gracetags.com/vlog-my-accent/

  8. Ok, you TOTALLY have an accent you goof! And, also, I am doing this. Elliott and I just recorded mine and it will go up tomorrow. MWAH!

  9. I just started reading recently, and this looks like so much fun that I joined in! Here's the link: http://phoenixbearies.blogspot.com/2011/10/accent-vlog.html Thanks for sharing this.

  10. love this. you are so cute! can't wait to see more vlogs from you!

  11. Is it totally weird that I just went and muted the iPod and turned the volume way up on my computer because I find that sort of thing so interesting? I do, for the record. That was fun.

    PS. It's soda, weirdo ;)

  12. love this, you so do not say mommal and poppal as i imagined. you are cute.

  13. I still say some thing the way I said them in Scotland and don't always realize it (and spell checker just told me not to type 'realise'). I call gym shoes 'trainers' and shopping cart 'trolley'. :)

  14. I've seen several of these and you are the first to answer shopping cart instead of buggy. thank you!

  15. This is SO fun! Can't wait to do mine :) Vlogging is addictive!!!

  16. You are the cutest! I might have to copy you and do a video, too. :)

  17. I saw Jamie's and now yours and I love them! I find it so fun to be able to imagine you reading your posts. I have never even recorded a video on computer. I may just try to figure it out to see if all the folks from the midwest think I have a California accent. I'll check back and link if I do.

  18. Ok I have to ask, how do you get videos off your iPhone and onto your blog...? I can't email them to myself. I'd love to post more videos on my blog (mainly of my kids, not really of myself) and I'd love to play along - so fun!

My favorite part of this vlog? "uh, rain." ;) Hopefully I'll get the chance to explain in my own vlog - I've heard when it rains and it's sunny outside, it means the devil's wife is mad at him. I never really knew the devil had a wife, but whatev.

  19. How fun! I say just about everything the same as you, so now there is no reason to do my own. ;) That and how much I am not ready to journey into vlogging. Can't wait to see more of yours though.

  20. Hahaha, I laughed so hard at "um...rain." The devil's beating his wife is what we used to say for that when I lived at home...I moved to the Big City and people looked at me so strangely whenever I said it.

I have a rare accent. It's the Tidewater accent, found in southern Virginia, and linguists think my generation will be the last to have it as its dying out. This made me really popular among my linguistics major friends in college. I remember once someone heard me talking in the cafeteria and recruited me for a project. I had to do something like this, say a bunch of words and phrases into a tape recorder and it would be compared to other speakers from around the country. There were a bunch of other people there when I went in to do the experiment. I listened to them, and then after, I said to my friend, "Those people all talked so funny!" He said, "Um...they were the control group (no accent)." I still smile about that, years later. They sounded funny to me!

  21. Stephanie, have you ever been told that you have a very unique way of articulating your "s" and "th"? Did you happen to have a lisp as a child? Super cute! I'm a linguist and it's always interesting to see accent/dialect things.

  22. I love this! We live outside Milwaukee but my family is originally from Chicago. I say everything the same way as you do.

You must get this all the time, but you look so young! I've read your age before but you look like you're in your late teens/early 20s. You are adorable!

PS - What was the answer to what happens when it's raining and sunny? I didn't get it.

  23. Ok, @SarahR best comment ever! HA! Thank you. I do feel younger than 34 (dangerously close to 35!)

And @evenshine - so interesting! I didn't have a lisp but Carter kind of does!

Your comment is gonna totally make my day!
