Hand-me-down tap shoes, she'll never take them off.
Also, to Ivy "tap" means STOMP.
She got a hair cut. It's layered a bit and now out of her eyes. It grabs her curls more and stuff. So cute. I feel clueless when it comes to little girl hair. I think there is this unwritten rule that no one told me about. People freak if you cut it but am I supposed to keep it all stringy and un-shaped? Oh PS it's just hair. And she's adorable.
The other day I had a frustrating butting-heads moment with Noah after school, and a complete breakdown in communication. This is exactly what I fear as he gets older, and there it was staring me in the face. Later the kids were painting at the table and instead of cleaning the kitchen nearby like I usually do, I sat down and painted with them.
Noah got emotional again when he smudged his painting a bit, and I tried to make him feel better by saying sometimes you just gotta work your mistake into your plan. Or something like that. Make it part of your art.
Soon, he spilled out what was bothering him. Something that happened at school. I realized -duh- art is his outlet and I need to remember this. We will be doing lots more painting. And mistaking.

I like that, make it part of your art. So true in life too. :)
ReplyDeletecute picture!! my 3 year old, i feel the same way about her hair. i don't want to cut it too short, but then it gets stringy. love Ivy's hair cut!
ReplyDeleteADORABLE haircut. Love it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I fear the same thing - the breakdown of communication with my boys.
Good for you for realizing and being patient for him to tell you what was going on.
who cut ivy's hair? it's adorable!
ReplyDeleteLove it when the realization HITS you and says this is GOOD. Glad you saw that and recognize. What a good mamma!!
ReplyDeleteThe haircut on your stomper is adorable :)
my 4th is a girl too and your right people FREAK OUT when I say she needs a haircut. Guess what, she not yet 2, and has had 6 haircuts!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post, love Ivy's tap shoes :-)
ReplyDeleteMotherhood is full of ups and downs, it's the hardest most rewarding job in the world!!!!!
Now of my comment is totally bipolar, and there are days that feels like life is just that bipolar!!!!
I love that Noah.

ReplyDeleteI REALLY like "make it part of your art".
ReplyDeleteAwww, her haircut is adorable!!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter's hair is so curly and I'm about ready to get her hair cut because it's kind of all over the place. I want to keep the curls of course, but think it will work better if it's trimmed and shaped a bit more.
Your comment to your son is beautiful. You are such an amazing mom. SO incredible. Your children are truly blessed.
She is precious. And thanks for the reminder to BE there for my kids. :-)
ReplyDeleteahh, art is so good for soul. love that. and sometimes mistakes make the best art. also...love the haircut!
ReplyDeleteYou may not realize it but you are brilliant in instintivly knowing what to do with your kids. Another way to talk to boys is to take a walk with them - maybe it is because they aren't facing you that boys will talk.
ReplyDeleteCan I ever relate to both you and Noah. So many moments like that here ... where we just cannot seem to communicate well with each other and just keep totally missing the mark.
ReplyDeleteIf your littles are like mine, I bet they heap on grace and forgiveness like they would chocolate syrup on ice cream.
I absolutely love that you don't have it all figured out and aren't afraid to say so and yet you are doing such a great job anyway :)
ReplyDeleteyes. i get this. art is my way to handle a lot of things too. thanks for the reminder, noah.
ReplyDeletealso, audrey has stringy hair. i have only cut it once because it looked like a mullet. seriously. but of course, i believe little girls can pull off any type of hair. :)
Would you look at that darling and her tap shoes... Don't worry about what other folks think... she is your darling and that hair is yours to play with until she grumbles!!!
ReplyDeleteOnce or twice a week I really try and sit and faff (?spelling?!) around with watercolors or whatever and even if I just doodle while they do real art. I tell you it is my sanity saver... I rely on it to calm us all down and it is a chance for me to listen to the goings on around my house closer to ground level!!!
Hope your weekend is a thoroughly good one!!!
you are such a good mama. and i needed this message for myself today, so thanks for sharing your mama love, my friend.
ReplyDeleteLove her tap-tap shoes. (as my girls call them)
ReplyDeleteSoon enough Brooklin will need a haircut too. But i get Kai's hair done in layers. It's cute. has shape.
Ivy's hair is adorable!
Make it part of your art! Love it!! And the haircut is adorable. :)
ReplyDeleteAfter babysitting my niece the other day and having to brush her long hair, I have decided that I will always keep Evelyn's hair short enough that it won't get tangles. ;)
ReplyDeleteAlso, gorgeous advice. I'll be taking that to heart.
Oh my goodness, Ivy is getting SO BIG! How do they grow so fast??
ReplyDeleteSo great of you to remember Noah's outlet. And sit down to get involved. My second, she's the one I worry about with communication. She's tough to read sometimes.
My goodness she just get's cuter and cuter. I LOVE this. So true sometimes you do just have to "make your mistake part of you plan."
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Heidi
We call the mistakes "happy accidents." Work them into the art, indeed.
ReplyDeleteThe one time I sat and painted with my girls recently, my girls beheld my work as if it were museum quality. :)
I don't normally go around recommending Emerson Eggerichs Love and Respect material because I think there a few things that can misapplied there, BUT he has some powerful things to say about men/boys and communication and shoulder-to-shoulder friendship. LMK if you want to hear more. Noah opening up to you while painting is a perfect example of it lived out.
Her haircut is SO cute! I'm glad you brought the topic up because my 2-year-old's hair is very straggly and always in her eyes. I think I would like to have it cut (by someone other than me...I'm scared of doing it). ;)
ReplyDeletestephanie@metropolitanmama.net
super cute haircut! so glad you stopped and painted with your kiddos! and glad you remembered noah's outlet...
ReplyDeleteIvy is just SO pretty!
ReplyDeleteAnd I hear you on the girl hair. I'm pretty clueless myself. I gave K a little top-of-the-head pony-tail the other day and thought it was so cute and 5 minutes later she ripped it out. So for now we're just going with the trimmed bangs. :)
I'm glad you were able to get to the root of Noah's emotions and that you could sit down and paint.
That's so awesome you understand that your child needs an outlet like that. The world needs more moms like you :)
ReplyDeleteIf I had tap shoes, I wouldn't take them off, either.
ReplyDeleteAlso, my daughter is my artist. She creates works about what she's feeling, how she doesn't like what I'm making for dinner, and what she wishes I would make, instead. It's kind of awesome, really.
No woman who ever had her hair cut when she was a little girl has ever become President of the United States.
ReplyDeleteI needed to read this. Thanks for the reminder.
