Hand-me-down tap shoes, she'll never take them off.
Also, to Ivy "tap" means STOMP.
She got a hair cut. It's layered a bit and now out of her eyes. It grabs her curls more and stuff. So cute. I feel clueless when it comes to little girl hair. I think there is this unwritten rule that no one told me about. People freak if you cut it but am I supposed to keep it all stringy and un-shaped? Oh PS it's just hair. And she's adorable.
The other day I had a frustrating butting-heads moment with Noah after school, and a complete breakdown in communication. This is exactly what I fear as he gets older, and there it was staring me in the face. Later the kids were painting at the table and instead of cleaning the kitchen nearby like I usually do, I sat down and painted with them.
Noah got emotional again when he smudged his painting a bit, and I tried to make him feel better by saying sometimes you just gotta work your mistake into your plan. Or something like that. Make it part of your art.
Soon, he spilled out what was bothering him. Something that happened at school. I realized -duh- art is his outlet and I need to remember this. We will be doing lots more painting. And mistaking.

ReplyDeleteMy daughter's hair is so curly and I'm about ready to get her hair cut because it's kind of all over the place. I want to keep the curls of course, but think it will work better if it's trimmed and shaped a bit more.

ReplyDeleteYou may not realize it but you are brilliant in instintivly knowing what to do with your kids. Another way to talk to boys is to take a walk with them - maybe it is because they aren't facing you that boys will talk.
ReplyDeleteCan I ever relate to both you and Noah. So many moments like that here ... where we just cannot seem to communicate well with each other and just keep totally missing the mark.

ReplyDeletealso, audrey has stringy hair. i have only cut it once because it looked like a mullet. seriously. but of course, i believe little girls can pull off any type of hair. :)
Would you look at that darling and her tap shoes... Don't worry about what other folks think... she is your darling and that hair is yours to play with until she grumbles!!!
ReplyDeleteOnce or twice a week I really try and sit and faff (?spelling?!) around with watercolors or whatever and even if I just doodle while they do real art. I tell you it is my sanity saver... I rely on it to calm us all down and it is a chance for me to listen to the goings on around my house closer to ground level!!!

ReplyDeleteThe one time I sat and painted with my girls recently, my girls beheld my work as if it were museum quality. :)
I don't normally go around recommending Emerson Eggerichs Love and Respect material because I think there a few things that can misapplied there, BUT he has some powerful things to say about men/boys and communication and shoulder-to-shoulder friendship. LMK if you want to hear more. Noah opening up to you while painting is a perfect example of it lived out.
Her haircut is SO cute! I'm glad you brought the topic up because my 2-year-old's hair is very straggly and always in her eyes. I think I would like to have it cut (by someone other than me...I'm scared of doing it). ;)

ReplyDeleteAnd I hear you on the girl hair. I'm pretty clueless myself. I gave K a little top-of-the-head pony-tail the other day and thought it was so cute and 5 minutes later she ripped it out. So for now we're just going with the trimmed bangs. :)
