I knit this for Beth's Eli. You know, Eli the BABY with a baby head?
This is what happens when you have the right pattern but wrong materials. Or the wrong pattern with the right materials. Or a bad knitter.
Whatever. Again I am certain this common knitting mistake is a perfect teachable moment for my life as is everything I put my hand or mind to lately (please do not even read that as sarcasm,
because
I'm not kidding, I am starting to cherish these lessons
and
hey man, at least I finished what I started.)

ReplyDeleteWasn't it the wise Elizabeth Zimmerman who said to knit the hat anyway, even if you aren't getting gauge, because with all the variety of heads in this world, it will surely fit someone? Smart lady, that EZ.
(Of course, this is written by someone who may or may not have recently frogged out an entire shawl, so clearly I don't always practice what I, erhm, I mean, EZ preaches LOL)
You had to make one for you first, so he could see how cool it is, and then wear his all the time. ;)

ReplyDeleteI had the opposite problem with the first hat I knitted - was an adult size, I knitted with slightly smaller yarn weight since was making for my 6-year-old. The hat turned out to fit my 4-year-old perfectly. ;)
he'll love you for the wonderful gift and I bet he'll still wear it regardless of any mistakes.

That would totally go with a turtle neck and a pair of jeans (for you) :) - This may be the next "HOT ITEM FOR WINTER" you will have started a CRAZE and we'll all want one ;)

ReplyDeleteI've done that too with making things for babies. I'll either have the wrong needle size; the wrong type of yarn; or the pattern isn't quite right. Plus I've never gotten the gauge thing down.

I agree with all of the above: you look good in it, and a wonky finished product just proclaims, "Made with LOVE!" (Or at least, that's what I tell myself.)

ReplyDeleteThis is why I don't knit socks anymore. The first one totally fits and the 2nd fits someone with a much larger foot than me and with me in size 11's that's saying something.

ReplyDeletethe first hat I ever crocheted...for my husband...ended up fitting as a cozy for a decorative glass globe thing that sat on our coffee table. It wouldn't even have fit a baby head.

ReplyDeleteI am taking a biblical counseling course and we were talking tonight about why people get stuck in patterns, why habits continue and why life is hard, basically. Anyway, the instructor reminded us that a sovereign God has charge over all our lives and has it all mapped out. (Psalm 139) Even the oopsie hats.
