What a day.
Yesterday tricked me all over. It started out like a banner day.
After the boys got on the bus I had this energy to go on a long walk with Ivy & Gray. So we set off and it was a beautiful morning. We watched frogs jump in the pond. And we got back and had a snack, then settled in with my knitting and Ray LaMontagne on Pandora, hanging out, and then I did let them watch a show while I cleaned up the kitchen.
I had just emailed back some friends about meeting up at a park and let them know I was having a super chill day and wanted to stay in and relax.
That was when the crying happened, and Gray reported that Ivy fell asleep on the arm of the recliner and then fell off. She was holding her poor little arm, and so I nursed her and she went back to sleep for a bit, but awoke and whimpered and pleaded, "put a bandaid on it, Mommy!" and I knew.
I gathered what I could together and tried to figure out the plan, and all the while she kept convincing when she tried to move it that she needed to be seen right away. Because our doctor isn't very closeby, it would be easier for us to just go to the ER.
And for real, that sucked, because Ivy was born at home. We haven't had to go this route yet and I didn't know what I'd be getting myself into. You just never know. And I wasn't in the mood to deal with that, or be on the defense. This very situation is was what hospitals are for, and I hoped they would just do their job and leave us alone about our parenting & health choices.
And I hate that I felt myself go to those worries, but anyway. It really worked out. They treated me warmly and respectfully. Even in a kind voice and with a smile the registration nurse said "I assume you don't immunize?"
They gave Ivy the rock star treatment, let her sit on my lap for the xray, and they even gave her stuffed raccoon a real splint all bandaged up.
Oh yeah, she fractured her little arm*. :(
covered up with an old leg warmer with a bone on it- how cute is that?
We'll go for her cast next week.
She couldn't wait to show off to her brothers, literally dancing in a circle singing, "Look at my boo boo! Look at my boo boo!"
I am her main man, her comfort and am thankful she finds relief in breastfeeding right now. So, my night was spent with a crick in my neck, holding her and nursing, and loving that I am totally aware of how awesome my children are.
What a day.
*edited to add 9/28/10 after visiting the orthopedist and getting new x-rays, we found out her arm is not broken, and she's moving it just fine now!

She is just SO cute and even cuter in her little cast! I have a lot of the same anxieties when going to hospitals since I too had a home-birth & do not immunize...you never know who you're gonna get or how it'll make you feel! But I'm glad that it went great!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad she's ok and that it went well!
ReplyDeleteI have a question though since I've never had to take the boys to the hospital and they weren't born in one either -- why would it matter at the ER whether they were born there or not? Just for records and stuff? It never occurred to me that they would ask/care, but I guess I never thought about it before.
What a trooper! Glad to see that she is doing okay. I saw your tweets and was wondering how she was doing.
ReplyDeleteOhhh... poor little Ivy. Glad the ER experience was decent, though. You just never know what you might get at the ER for treatment...
ReplyDeleteI still have Evan's leg cast from when he was just under 2.It's SO TINY. I can't bear to throw it away...
Hope she heals quickly and at least it's not something worse!
Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteOh, I don't think it matters, they didn't even ask about that to be honest (about where she was born)- but they didn't have her in hospital records or on file with any of their pediatricians, and I didn't know if that would be a pain or not. I didn't know what to expect, but it worked out!
Steph
I love that smile on her face.
ReplyDeleteWhen The Chicken broke her arm she was a bit older and she fell off the top bunk. She was so proud of that cast and we actually had to save it for her. (AFter I aired it out first because even though she broke it in the dead of winter that thing stunk to high heaven....as did her arm)
Much love to you both!
What a sweet little lovey girl! I love the bone babyleg covering her splint!
ReplyDeleteUh oh, I can never get comments to work when I have to do this drop-down thing.
ReplyDeleteFawn,
ReplyDeleteit looks like it worked! You can choose to leave your blog link or just comment as anonymous!
Steph
Oh wow, it actually worked! Sorry for my lame test message. That's never worked before!
ReplyDeleteThe leg warmer is an awesome idea. Do baby bones heal faster than older bones?
She looks so proud of her boo boo. How can something that hurts so bad look so cute? Hugs to her and her special mama :)
ReplyDeleteYes- Children heal amazingly- their bones heal way better and faster than adults! (so I'm told)
ReplyDeleteSteph
So looks amazing considering she just fractured her arm!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad they treated you well at the hospital, that is a comfort to hear. :-)
Aww, poor thing! Looks like she and you handled it all like rock stars, though! Hope you have a really uneventful day today!
ReplyDeletelove how you made use of the leg warmer. Ivy is such a trooper and doesn't let a little break stop her from performing.
ReplyDeletePoor Ivy - I can't imagine that with a two year old... hope she heals quickly! Does she have a hard cast or soft? Alex fractured her arm 6 weeks ago and gets her cast off on Monday. We've gotten so used to her having it that I think it'll be a little bit of an adjustment to have it gone, for all of us. Feel better, little Ivy! :)
ReplyDeleteAw, poor Ivy. And poor you. I'm glad it was all OK - or as OK as a broken arm can be. I hope that Ivy continues to enjoy the novelty of having a splint / cast, and that everything heals smoothly and quickly.
ReplyDeletePoor Ivy, and poor Mommy. I'm so sorry, but I'm glad that the hospital trip wasn't a negative one.
ReplyDeleteTell that little girl to get better soon :)
Poor sweet girl! I hope you're able to have a nice weekend, regardless!
ReplyDeleteAwww. I feel your mommy pain. Hugs to the pitiful girl!
ReplyDeleteSteph,
ReplyDeleteYou're a great mother. I just think you should know that :) I really look up to you.
-Courtney
So sorry she hurt her little self, and so happy to hear that you were treated respectfully. I know the feeling...
ReplyDeleteshe is the cutest little broke thing I've ever seen...
ReplyDeleteA couple of years ago in the spring when my daughter was 2 and we were planting our seeds for our garden my daughter decided to jump off my front porch and landed in my bushes. At first she didn't tell me what was wrong. We came in and were getting ready to make lunch when I ask her if her arm hurts. She says yes and points to her shoulder. I give her some motrin thinking it is just muscle related. 10 minutes later my husband asks her and she points to her risk and asks him to feed him her mac and cheese. Too bad she had already eaten other finger food. She ended up buckling both bones in her arm and in a case for 6 weeks. Luckily she could have a fiberglass cast and could get it wet.
ReplyDeleteoh poor thing. we just went through that with my youngest, nadia (19mos). she fractured her leg back in july and got the cast off last month.
ReplyDeletewow!! my little sister once broke *both* arms from falling off the rope swing. She had a bright orange on one arm and a bright pink cast on the other arm for 6 weeks. she had to stay home from school and couldn't suck her thumb! after that my dad took the swing down, by shooting it with a 4-10 rifle, from my bedroom window. i suppose that's life in the country!
ReplyDeleteShe is such a cutie & looks quite proud of her cast. Glad it all worked out and she is okay! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, poor little Miss :-(
ReplyDeleteSuper cool cast cover, but I hope it is the last one anyone is your household ever has to sport!
Such a cutie, and so brave.
ReplyDeleteoh my! Hugs little Ivy, stay close to mama and heal up quickly! :)
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, what a little trooper!
ReplyDeleteI actually had a scary moment yesterday -- two days ago she fell at daycare and bashed her wee nose and yesterday it was looking quite swollen and she wouldn't let me touch it. I was so worried that we'd have to head to the hospital (where she's only been once, for a stomach bug thing last year -- a nightmare).
Anyhow, turns out she's completely find, just annoyed with me trying to get at her nose... all is well! And my heart can stop fluttering away!
What a big girl, to take it so well. I'm glad the hospital was so cool about letting you parent the way you see fit. I think more people are choosing more alternative types of medicine and so forth now a days and the medical profession is becoming more and more aware of it and in a bit less shock and awe. Very good. Hope the little peanut heals quickly!
ReplyDeleteA bunch of us are sitting in a hotel room right now, and Kim (prairiemama) just told us all about poor sweet Ivy. Am I a big baby that this made me tear up? :( I really really hate that she broke her arm. Jerk move, recliner. Jerk. Move.
ReplyDeleteSo glad she's smiling and clearly doing just fine. Hugs to YOU though. Heart boom, and not the good kind.
<3
Ohhhh, baby girl. Too sweet a face to be in that kind of pain. Many hugs, love, snuggles and sparkly fairy dust sprinkled over Miss Ivycakes. <3
ReplyDeletepoor sweet baby! but oh is she cute! hugs & snuggles to her!
ReplyDeleteYou are both troopers. :)
ReplyDeleteBless her heart - but way to make even a cast cute!
ReplyDeleteOh Steph! I'm so sorry! Fractured limbs, stitches, hospitals...it's all just so stressful. I hate when the baby is hurt! Mine or yours, or anyone's for that matter :( But I'm glad the hospital was cool and didn't harass you about your choices. Because that is seriously not what you needed, but you never know with hospitals. Please give Ivy a huge hug from us. And that bone leg warmer?? TOO CUTE!
ReplyDeletePoor baby! When my son broke his leg last year when he was only two, I was shocked how many stories I heard from people whose toddlers had also broken a bone. The orthopedist didn't even blink when we brought him in. Healing vibes to you both.
ReplyDeletePoor baby girl! Praying it heals quickly! Cute leg warmer though!
ReplyDeletePoor sweet baby girl! I hope she heals fast!
ReplyDeletepoor little punkin! we'll be praying for quick healing. (& yay for a wonderful team at the hospital!)
ReplyDeletePoor little Ivy! Hope it heals fast!
ReplyDeletePoor pumpkin! Hope she's on the mend soon.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, what a day! We have not made an emergency trip yet - thank goodness. Hugs to you and Ivy!
ReplyDeleteShe is so adorable. She transcends the cast. I love how you dressed it up so cleverly.
ReplyDeleteI hope she heals quickly! Kids are amazing. Joel broke his arm as a toddler and it didn't slow him down a bit. We still have his cast. It is one of his treasures.
Oh, poor Ivy! Here is hoping that she heals up quickly!
ReplyDeleteShe looks like a Rock Star!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing how we just know when we need to go to the ER. I always wondered how I would know but you just do.
Your a great Mama!
Oh, that puss. So sweet. My last and I weaned in June. There have been sop many times when I wished we had that still. Thank you for taking me back for a moment.
ReplyDeleteLook at that little grin...what a girl!
ReplyDelete{sending prayers your way}
I go away for one long weekend in two years and your baby goes and breaks her arm... you poor thing!!! Your poor baby I am so sorry!!! I know how you feel about the ER... I have never ever taken a kid of mine to the doctor...one needed stitches once and I sent the father person to do the whole "you haven't immunized" thing - actually I just knew I couldn't face seeing my child being stitched... and then to make it worse he didn't have a health card because kids born at home don't have those!!! Medically none of my kids exist... and I hope to keep it there as long as I can!!! I hope you are both feeling better really soon!!!
ReplyDeleteAww, man, that really is not fun. I have been lucky I have broken 5 bones in my entire life, just none of them have ever been mine. I know when the Girl takes a tumble she is a lot like me and rolls with it. I hope all is well
ReplyDeleteI saw when this happened on Twitter and I am so glad Miss Ivy is feeling better today. Very handy to have breastfeeding to comfort her, as well.
ReplyDeletePoor sweet little one! She looks adorable though and good call on the legwarmer! Thank goodness for nursing comforts and nice ER nurses! So glad everything worked out for you all.
ReplyDeleteOh man, poor Ivy! That sounds like stuff that goes down over here, not your house! And ironic it's Ivy that gets a boo-boo and not your boys (like my house).
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about the judgey judgey at the hospital. When Troy was admitted for the bacteria infection that causes meningitis, we had to speak with several people and explain our decision on why we chose not to vaccinate.
I hope sweet face Ivy is feeling better soon and I hope you are too. :)
xo-z
Oh, Ivy! You strong girl! I am sure you will love having all your brothers signatures and drawings on your cast.
ReplyDeleteYou look so happy showing it off. And that picture of you breastfeeding! Love both!
I am glad you were treated nicely at the hospital.
Marcela
She is so gorgeous, cast and all. I hope it heals pain free. xxx
ReplyDeleteThat first broken bone is tough! I still remember what happened with mine.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like she's doing pretty good. I hope the time with the cast passes quickly!
What a super crappy way to wake up from a nap, right? Poor little thing. The leg warmer really dresses up the cast, though.
ReplyDeleteOh Steph! I am so sorry you both had to go through this but I do have to say she is just the cutest sitting there with her smile and showing off her boo boo. I hope it will heal fast and she is in not too much of pain. HUGS to you both!
ReplyDeleteoh, poor thing!!! (and poor mama!!!)

I am so happy to read your "edited to add." That is GOOD news!
