Only Perfect In The Pictures

This morning it seemed the kids were literally at each other's throats before they were out of bed.

CONSTANT bickering and agitating and downright hurtful, they were!

Even Ivy was throwing punches and pulling hair and biting.

I had promised them a hike in the woods because it was supposed to be a nice day but then I wondered how I could possibly take them like this.

And then wondered how I couldn't? Because I didn't want to be stuck in the house with them.

And I wanted an excuse to get a raspberry truffle frappé.

So off we went and I took a couple pictures but not many and most of the time all I heard was:

I'm cold.

I'm hot.

My legs are tired.

I'm hungry.

There's rocks in my shoe.

My arm is too itchy.

I want to go that way.

I want to go this way.

There's more rocks in my shoe.

And you should have heard what the kids were saying.

[Just kidding.]

So anyway. There were a couple sweet moments and it was good for us all to get fresh air and run walk drag off some restless energy.

I just wish sometimes it could be perfect, just for a little bit, like in the pictures.

  4. Perfect or not, it really doesn't matter. It's the living that matters. The every day one foot in front of the other, living.

    And that little cloth diapered tush of Ivy's is simply too cute. ;)

    The great thing about pictures is that when enough time passes, you won't remember that it wasn't perfect.

  8. At the end of each day, I look at my kids when they are sleeping and wonder how they could behave the way they did and rile me up as much as they did during the day. And then I know we'll do it all over again the next day. It's frustating and I definitely can't stand the whining, but in the grand scheme of things, we all realize that the good always is better than the bad.
    PS - love the pigtails, they are so cute.

  22. Oh, I KNOW those mornings. I'd have to admit we have way more whiny, at-each-other mornings than the picture perfect ones. It's a good thing God made 'em cute, right?

  24. I soooo get that!! sometimes I feel like a hypocrite when I say smile for the camera! when inside my head I'm adding (you miserable children).....but it helps to turn your day around and only remember the good stuff right??

    oh and I love Ivy's sweater...so cute.

  25. perfect is just a sniff of perfume, or the wind in your hair...you can't quite catch and if you do its for brief moments but life being perfect isnt quite what we wish or we'd get bored :) and as Heather said of course in the end we only remember the good times

  26. We're having one of those days right now, and we're leaving shortly to get some fresh air... and it always helps a little. Doesn't make it perfect, but it makes it tolerable enough to enjoy :)

  27. Yap we have some of those days too! But did the walk help? It usually does for us, put the girls straight to bed after (I guess fresh air tires them)

  30. I could have written this. My life seems so much more different in pictures.

    Like you, I can have the kids at each others throats, and I'll be near tears, but in pictures everything looks so perfect.

  32. Thanks for sharing this. Your pictures are perfect, as for the rest of it, it's hard not to have perfect expectations. I constantly fail, and so do my kids. Lately, I'm blaming Adam and Eve and the fall. ;-)

  35. But it's still so good that you did get out! So often when we are having one of those days I fall into the "how can I possibly take them out?" mindset. And then, like you said, I completely regret it, because OHMYGOSH staying in ends up being so much worse!:)

    as my kids get older (they are 8 and 10 now), I realize more and more that it's the imperfect times that are the most meaningful, the most memorable, and the most character building (for me, that is!). :)

  39. When you look back on these photos, you won't remember all the bickering and fighting- you'll just see Ivy and her big bros and you'll be so happy that they have each other, even if they do fight! : )

  40. Often I find myself out walking with the littles because on those cranky days...I feel better outside even if they don't LOL.

  42. When everyone's cranky a walk in the woods is the very best solution to the problem. At the very least you'll feel better and they'll work off energy. It looks like a lovely day and every one you get in Indiana has to be special.

  43. Kaylee said it well above. I make sure to take some pics of full on tantrums sometimes too. My husband & I always laugh hardest when we look back at those! And I can't wait to show them to my then 3 teenage daughters!

    I often think the same thing. Things are never quite as idyllic as in pictures.

    For example, Ivy throwing punches? Not that cute pig-tailed, sweater-wearing angel! I can't even begin to imagine it. ;)
