I had just taken a break from drying dishes and was going to send a Tweet about my latest post at Real Moms Guide (my thoughts about breastfeeding in public), so I was sitting with my laptop by our back window when I heard a boom and looked outside to see a BIG part of our fence fall down. I immediately thought a car must've hit it, and called 911. Then I thought to myself I hope it wasn't just the wind!
And it wasn't.
Not the side that fell down, this is the part the car drove through.
An [elderly] lady had hit another car, lost control, and hit our fence and then drove through another part of our fence and then backed out and ended up on the other side of our yard. Or something. I didn't see it all happen but it looked like a tornado came through.
And I am so so very thankful, still shaken up about it, that the kids weren't home from school yet. Because the first thing they do is go outside to practice golf right in the very spot that the car came through.
This is the toy Ivy was playing with in the photo here. I found it mangled in the street.
Both drivers were ok. One car was towed away. I'm hoping the fence company can come make repairs very soon (our poor fence has gaping wounds and a toothy sad smile), and I hope the insurance transaction is quick and uneventful.
I had a really hard time sleeping last night. I kept thinking about how dangerous it was that I let the kids play so close to that part of the fence. Would I have reacted soon enough if Ivy had been down there?
It doesn't matter now. All is ok. Thank goodness all is ok.

ReplyDeleteSomething like that happened here a few years ago, except the woman was drunk. My kids usually play in the exact spot she came through our fence.
My stomach still turns when I think about it.

It's funny how things like this always remind you that everything. EVERYTHING! Could change in a split second. And no matter what we do, how careful we are, we're just so incredibly vulnerable. I'm so glad y'all are all okay. I'd still be shaken up too. And clingy!

ReplyDeleteI'm so glad they were OK. And truthfully, there are probably many times each day angels must protect our little ones. We are just unaware.
The "what ifs" are enough to make your heart stop. I am so very thankful that everyone was safe and exactly where they were supposed to be at that moment. God and His angels were at work... thank goodness! Tighter hugs today! XOXO

ReplyDeleteI was reminded of this after the tornado...that the line between being totally ok and everything in our life destroyed, is so fine it's scary.

Thank goodness the kids were at school! Are you guys a corner house? I love corner houses, but my mom always said corner houses are dangerous and I never understood why.
ReplyDeleteSo thankful your kids weren't there. A few years ago a little old lady swerved near our church and ran through the playground fence. It was minutes after the playground had cleared due to Moms Group being over.

ReplyDeletesteph, that brought tears to my eyes. i'm awful laid back, but the "what if's" in those kind of situations can make me crazy. so thankful that God is so much bigger than all of our what ifs and can be praised for the grace shown to the people that were involved in the accident and the sweet grace shown to those (precious children!) who weren't involved it it.

ReplyDeleteIf I may say this gently and lovingly - I don't see anything dangerous about you allowing your children to play in your yard near a fence. We build fences in our yard to protect our children. 99.9% of the time, the fences do their job and keep them away from cars and other dangers. There is no way you could have foreseen an elderly woman driving through the fence! Sometimes the fences we build offer plenty of practical protection, but the One who holds them in His Hands is the only one who can truly protect them.
And again, I say all of that very gently because no one drove through MY yard yesterday. I just don't want you being too hard on yourself, sister.

ReplyDeleteI think the odds of something like this happening are astronomically low. I'm sure that your children are safe in your yard. Although I can imagine that I would be locking mine up for the next 17 years if something like that happened here.

ReplyDeleteWow, I hadn't looked at the date of this post and figured it was that tornado at first. That is so scary and as a mom can't help going through those "OMG, What if?" kinds of thoughts. They can be hard to push away. Thank goodness it was only the fence. And, like you said, hopefully the insurance process will be smooth.

Eek! I'm so glad that everyone is okay. Chances are that it will never happen again but if it will make you feel more secure you could look into getting metal posts put in as part or in front of your replacement fence - the ones designed to prevent cars from driving through. Your insurance might even be happy to pay for it.
ReplyDeleteOur neighbour just had some put in in front of their gas meter in the driveway to prevent people from accidentally hitting it with a car when backing out of it.
I know God has his hand on you and yours though, so you have nothing to fear!
