Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da

Tonight I drove with the windows down and music playing that reminded me of outdoor summer concerts twelve years ago. It smelled like trees and mosquitoes and night. Did I ever tell you back then I had a convertible? Because I did.

I drive the same roads I drove before, but this night there is a baby sleeping in the back.

The other day I was rushing the excited kids out the door to get to the fair to ride some more rides and one of them did something very mean to another and it jolted our excitement. It made me yell. And I sent him to his bed and wondered what to do. How could I let him go some place fun when he just did something so disobedient?

Having several kids can get tricky when it comes to time outs and discipline. Often the others get second-hand punished. And me, too.

I didn't want to barter. I wanted there to be consequences. But I'm no good at this. This was a glaring example of how not good I am at this.

There was true remorse and repentance on his part. I believed it, too. And so we were off to the fair as planned, just a little later and a little less high.

The car radio sang to us the Beatles "...life goes on, bra!"

I drive the same roads, but it's different every time.

  1. I, too, had a convertible. Bright red. So much fun.

It isn't quite the same, riding in my mini-van, but it holds so much more love in it.

  2. "...it smelled like trees, and mosquitoes and night."

  4. Your posts are so vivid I feel like I'm right there with you.

Glad you guys still got to go to the fair.

  5. I come here to just get away. To feel! Thanks for always doing that Steph.

  6. This was great- I felt like I was RIGHT there :) (And a convertible? Fun!)

  7. I enjoy your post. As the mom of six, I can relate to your dilemma when it comes to guiding our children to make good choices without 'punishing' everyone. But what a great lesson ... living within a community of people (or a family) everyone's actions effects each other!

    Happy day to you!

  8. I really relate to this. Since my boy share a room often time my youngest ends up getting punished even when he has done nothing wrong.

If they are suppose to be lying in bed watching a movie and my eldest is being rambunctious i often have to turn the TV off which ends up being not fair to my younger child.

Parenting is such a hard balance and we often end up the bad guys in more ways than one.

On a lighter note i love riding with the windows down and my hair blowing in the wind. It is a freeing feeling.

  9. Your writing is so sweet, so good. We only have one baby now, but your post reminded me of my days teaching Kindergarten. One incident could bring down the energy and excitement from the whole group. (And you're always wondering if you handled the situation correctly.) You're doing an awesome job. I'm always inspired by you!

  10. I'm jealous of your convertible. I don't think I've ever even ridden in one. Although I have ridden in a jeep with the top off, which is sort of the same. Good times.

I think we're all feeling our way through parenting. It isn't easy, and each new kid brings a whole new set of joys and challenges. Even as we learn and get more experienced, so do they. It makes me feel a little bit better to remember that, anyway.

  11. I have such a hard time with the consequences also. There needs to be a consequence, but so often it results in everyone being punished. So difficult.

  12. Even though it feels like the other 3 kids are getting second hand punished, it is a learning experience for them to know that the behavior exhibited is not tolerated. Plus each one was secretly glad it wasn't him or her being punished and knowing that being thoughtful and kind is really important so important that they might miss the fair.

  13. I am just now trying to figure out how to do the punish one and not the other thing. I don't think I am that good at it either. I always end up saying, "he's a good kid" and letting it blow over. Ah well, he IS a good kid. :)

  14. boy is good to hear someone else is also figuring out the discipline thing. I've been pondering whether to include that in my scheduled Attachment Parenting post for Monday.

    Helps me decide.

  15. I totally am with you on the multiple kids and disciple when you are going somewhere fun. Have any great ideas let me know :)

  16. This sure reminds me of our house. We experience the ups and downs too. We get all excited to do something and someone acts up and kind of brings everyone down. It's true though that Life goes on and you just have to move through it!

  17. Ohhh yes. Your post had me in so many ways. The thoughts of life when life was oh so different, but I don't think we never stopped to appreciate it then as we do now.

And then, ugh, the discipline issue. Thank you, for letting me know I'm not the only one stuggling. I've got three girls... 6, 4 and 8m and when one of the older ones is not behaving as she should it is so hard. It there any right way?

Thank you for validating that I'm not the only one struggling....

  18. This is SO me. It is really hard when you have more than one and the others have to suffer for it, but it has to happen that way sometimes, I guess.

  19. well now how about you go to the fair as planned but he can't go on a couple of rides? easier said after you had time to thinka nd you are not in the situation but well....for next time maybe :P

Your comment is gonna totally make my day!
