I keep meaning to write about when and where I wear Ivy. I even had this journal going in my head all last week, taking pictures every day when I would have her in the sling like during dinner-making time and shopping at Target and so forth but it was all in my head and- note to self- don't journal in your head. Because I already forgot it all. Then yesterday I found out I was in the March issue of Pregnancy Magazine talking about babywearing and I thought this might be a good time to talk about it and post this photo I took in Ikea the other day. Me, The Babywearer with a zillion slings had to borrow Sarah's mei tai because I didn't bring one!
But, what I have been meaning to tell you is that I don't wear Ivy nearly as often as I wore Gray. She is usually much happier playing on the floor or napping in bed instead of the sling. There are certainly times I wear her- especially when out and about- because often I need my hands for something else (like holding other little hands) and she needs to be held, too.
I guess my wearing Gray was more about keeping him close rather than having my hands free, and my wearing Ivy is the complete opposite. Some babies want to be held more than others, and wearing them in a carrier is a wonderful option to have. But it's ok if you don't wear them all.day.long.
It's ok if you don't wear them at all.
In the article I am quoted as saying that (by babywearing) I feel like I'm doing a good job as a mother. I think I remember saying that no matter what her parenting style, it is important for a mother to feel like she is doing a good job. I am pretty sure my quote was referencing the whole big picture of our Attachment Parenting style in general and the other choices we make, not just that if you wear your baby you will feel like you are a good mother.
No matter which method I have used to get there, it does make me feel like I'm doing a good job when I can respond to my baby's cues and know when she needs to be held close and when she needs to explore on her own.
Isn't that what Motherhood is pretty much all about?
