It's Too Shirty


A typical morning of getting Gray dressed.

He has a reason to not wear every single thing in his drawer. And I'm just giving you a short example of his shirts. There are many more, and his pants? Don't get me started. Don't even get me started.

The first shirt you see is Too Buttony.

The second is Too Collary.

Third, Too Churchy. (And I hope he means that it's only for church 'cause guess what? He's totally wearing it to church tomorrow.)

The fourth is Too Donutty

And the last shirt is Too Dinosaury.


Oh, and finally? The one I got him to put on after I took the photo? Just a simple long-sleeved tee made of soft cotton and NOTHING on it, no picture, buttons, collar... he said it was Too Shirty.

    Only he's wanting to dress up EVERY day for preschool.

  8. Sounds like my sensory self even now... although my criteria are different. Shirts are either "too buttony" or "too scratchy" or "too taggy." I wish I could say he'll definitely outgrow it, but some of us don't! LOL.

  11. I'm so there with you. My middle child is nearly 3 and he's the most stubborn and strong willed person on the planet (but I love him dearly). He definitely makes my days interesting!

  16. I can totally relate to the struggles with getting a kid dressed. Every single morning it's a struggle to get my 4-year-old decent. The magnitude of the resistance is phenomenal, really.

    Although I do hate a shirty shirt myself. ;)

  18. Don't you ever feel like you're trapped in a sitcom? The studio audience is roaring, and the part of you that has out-of-body experiences is laughing too, but your character on the show is way annoyed.

    Personally, I'm partial to too dinosaury (with a deep admiration for kids who learn the simple yet diabolical joy of button-pushing at such an early age).

  20. LOL, oh my goodness! That is actually worse than my almost 3yo these days. The other night he was running through the house (naked and wet after a bath), refusing pajamas, and clinging to some "day time" clothes, yelling, "It's NOT night time! It's DAY TIME!"

    It's madness to even try to argue!

  21. Do you know how cute this little guy is!!! Betcha do... you could just eat him up! Lovely... I would sure want to hang out with someone so cute all day - oh! hang on I do! Only my one that age is of the girl variety - but boy she knows what she doesn't want... while I flap around trying to find out what it is she is actually after - A lot funnier looking in from outside!!!

  23. I totally get the "too buttony", I don't like too many buttons myself (I'm button-challenged, I tell ya). Oh the every day trials when you have little ones at home. This brings a smile to my face, because I know what you're goin' through, girl!

  25. Every morning S picks out two pairs of underwear. He goes, I want to wear this one! And you say, okay. And the he THROWS THEM and says, "NO, THESE ONES!"

  28. My 4 year old is the same way..it is so hard to get him dressed I just give up and I really don't care if he doesn't match (unless we are going somewhere he needs to), so for school you never know what he will show up in.

    He will ONLY wear comfy pants, no buttons, snaps zipper etc.

  30. Oh my, I can sympathize so well! My Marie can't articulate her reasons yet, but our attempts to give her choices are beginning to backfire. Often, both (or all) choices are snatched away and flung on the floor with such violence and rage and vehement head-shaking, topped only by the flailing and shrieking that commence if we dare try to get her dressed anyway. Sigh. I guess some little ones have a greater need to assert their ability to make autonomous decisions.

  37. OMG! I can totally relate! My 5 year old has been VERY picky about what he wears for 2 years now! We went thru a phase where he would only wear grey sweatsuits, then a 3 piece suit phase WITH a tie! Then the superhero phase complete with red rubber boots (that were NOT allowed to get wet!!!) and a red cape! I make him pick out his clothes the night before and he MUST wear what he picks out. NO EXCEPTIONS!!! It's getting him dressed at least. :-)

    If if makes you feel any better my toddler goes to school with wild hair almost everyday...because he HATES having his head touched for any reason.

    So yeah...I feel your pain....but from a different angle.

  39. That post reminds me of my mom (whom I loved dearly and miss terribly), she would add a "y" to the end of any word to make it an adjective, so this post was super funny and sweet for me!

    Was that one line a shout out to Toby Mac? "Don't get me started. Don't even get me started. I'm Yours..." Love that song! It's one of my go-to songs when I start to get tired when I'm running.

  48. You may have a child in Gray who is like Terry. Terry hated new shirts until he was made to wear it and then he wanted to wear it all the time. He also scowled a lot. One time he was standing in the rain and I wanted him to either come in or wear a raincoat or something like that because it was raining and he said, "It's not raining where I am." He still does his own thing, but he is happy.

  55. My littlest brother was just like that! He also would never ever ever wear overalls, because starting when he was like 14 months old he would throw them down and say he hated "strappin' pants". He is still a hoot now, and he is 9. :)

    Gray sounds too cute. You are going to have fun with that little personality. I love it.

  61. Too Donutty! I think that's my favorite EVER.

    Of my boys, the 3 year old is the only one who seems to care much about what he wears--and there is no rhyme nor reason to it. He decided the shirt he was wearing the other day was a "basketball shirt" (I'm not sure why) and then refused to change.

    With the older boys I feel fortunate when I can get them to care enough to pick clean clothes out of the drawer rather than just recycle yesterday's stuff off the floor!

  63. My three-year-old has been wearing his swimming trunks every day. When we have to leave the house, he will agree to wear pants over his swimsuit, but he removes the pants as soon as we get back in the door. Weird kid.

  67. Oh this totally reminds me of Hannah! Her shirts have been too 'floppy', too 'plain', and too 'scratchy' all winter. Too 'shirty' is one we haven't heard yet though, lol! :)

  69. Kids get too many choices. We didn't get a choice of what we got to wear as kids. Mom put something on us, and that's what you wore.

  70. o.k...I have a 4 year old who has been the SAME way with her clothing for 3 years!!!!

    All last year she had to have her sleeves rolled up just so to a certain spot on her arm or it was NOT pretty.

    I think she just has sensitive skin and does not like the way things feel.

    I've given up and let her pretty much wear whatever she wants as long as it is clean...even then I'll compromise if I know a jacket is going over top ;)
