Rearview Mirror

We were stopped at a red light. I fell in love with you all over again watching you in the rearview mirror today.

You'll be 8 years old in just a few days but I can already see the teenager in you. The grown man you'll be when your heart will be taken away from me and given to someone else.

Your teeth are coming in so big and painfully cute and you're all arms and legs and your pants are too short. We'll get you some new ones for your birthday.

I look at you and see all my favorite parts about you only getting better and better. I do not long for you to be little again because I just love who you are right now so much it hurts.

  1. Aww. I know. I feel the same way. And though my boy is almost 6 I can still see that baby in him. At the same time I can see that older boy emerging too. So precious. :)

  2. How well said! I will have to admit while I love my 8 year old just as he is, I do miss when he is little, but now he is so smart and so much fun to be with and talk to.

  3. That is beautiful. I always say that I don't wish Big Brother were younger again but it would be okay with me if it didn't go by so fast. :)

  6. Sniff! I will admit, my daughter will be 4 in a week and I do long for her to be smaller again sometimes. Although it is very exciting to see this person, this complete individual emerging too.

  9. Steph, you have a brilliant gift for using few words to say so much.

  10. I was thinking similar thoughts just the other day when I was noticing how old Jake looked at only 5.

Your words came together better than mine ever would. So sweet!

  12. That is great! I feel the same way about my kids at every age. When people ask my favorite age for the kids, I always answer that I love any age they are for exactly who they are at that moment.

  14. What a lucky boy to have you as his mama :) I, too, will admit that I long for my boys to be small again - even Henry and he's not even that big yet....lol

Time is going a bit too fast for me.

  15. Two weeks ago, my "baby" turned 10. I woke her up for school singing "Happy Birthday" to her and couldn't get through the second line before I burst into tears. Ugh! Where does the time go???

  16. There is that strange dichotomy of the baby and the child. It's hard to come to grips with both.

  22. i have to say i can completely relate. AND i am really HAPPY that you mentioned his pants being too short. My son's pants suddenly got too short - i am hoping to hold out til school is out and not buy new jeans - just some shorts. but we will see.
