The moment I saw that second line appear so many things flashed through my head- just like a movie! Good and bad. Happy and scary. Ivy's just 3 months old. Another homebirth! FIVE kids?
I immediately ran into my bedroom and demanded hubby for the box. (Maybe I was a bit frantic.) LETMESEETHEBOX!

And for the first time in all the 8 years I've been tinkling on those sticks, two lines does not mean pregnant.
And for the first time in all my life I think that maybe just maybe I never want to take another pregnancy test again.

My heart is racing right now...At first I thought you were revealing that you WERE!!!
ReplyDeleteOMG! Lisa and I were freaking out for you! Until we saw the last picture. HOLY MOLY, girl!!
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was atually..."She has 4 kids, one of whom is only 3 months, and there is really a chance she could be pregnant? WOW!"
ReplyDeleteWhoa. Yeah, that gave me a start too.
ReplyDeleteHoly Cow Mama...that is scary! I took one of the tests like that before and freaked me out as well. I don't ever read the box before hand as most test are all the same. Sure taught us a lesson right lol.
ReplyDeleteWow! That was an intense post. Why did you have to wait until the end to let us know what really happened?
ReplyDeleteYou're such a tease! I was totally freaking out until I saw the last one. I would have read that test as pregnant, too!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh I was freaking out for you!
ReplyDeletei just yelled out "holy...." she's having #5!
ReplyDeleteDid your stomach sink to your toes or what????
Darn Target brand is very deceptive!
WOW! I would have been confused too! I guess it always pays to read the box first, though I would have done the same, just assuming two lines was a positive. Just when you think you've got it figured out, they up and change things.
ReplyDeleteWe had a "scare" this week too and my results were the same as yours. I need to write a post about that too - in retrospect there's humor in it, but at the time it was notsomuch with the funny!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh you scared me! But also, that's hilarious. Maybe in the future spring for the
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck it cut off my comment! I said maybe you should spring for the digital tests in the future. :) You know, the ones that actually SAY pregnant or not pregnant. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I actually had to read your post through twice to figure out that you weren't pregnant. That sure would be something if you were.
ReplyDeletehaha! wow. thats a weird test! i always thought 2 lines meant positive.
ReplyDeletewell i think its prob good lol.. i mean my mom had my brother and i close. my brother was 2 months old when she got pregnant w/ me.. but she also didnt have 4 kids already :-) just 1. So it wasnt to bad.
We want another one now :-)
You ARE such a tease. You totally had me going!!! I think postpartum hormonal changes are so similar to the early changes of pregnancy that it's natural to be suspicious. I have wasted so very much money on pregnancy tests these five years of marriage.
ReplyDeleteWow... I'm glad you're good with the results.
ReplyDeleteHOLY COW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf ever you do test again I'd say, DON'T USE THAT ONE! lol
I would have been freaking out!
ReplyDeletecongrats on the negative test :-) feel free to send any leftover baby dust my way!
ReplyDeleteI think my heart stopped a minute there when I saw that first picture. WHEW.
ReplyDeleteThat is why I spring for the digital kind that say "pregnant" or "not pregnant." Otherwise I'd be sitting there thinking IS THAT A PLUS SIGN??? I'm pregnant now and I wonder what we'll do after the baby is born. I don't want to use birth control because we've recently come to the realization that God's in control and will space our children the way He wants them. But last time my period didn't come back for a few months, and I'd probably be freaking out the whole time that I was pregnant and that was why I wasn't having it. I am kind of paranoid.
ReplyDeleteHoly cow, that's a heart attack in a post!
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh steph! I read the first paragraph and saw the two lines on the picture and just yelled out to everyone around me- oh my goodness- steph is pregnant! :) Then I kept reading :) What a crazy test.
ReplyDelete...also, I really hope we can meet up soon :)
Whoosh, I BET you're relieved! When The Boy was three months old - and his birth was INCREDIBLY traumatic and he was still nursing ALL THE TIME - I thought I might be pregnant, and I remember holding the pregnancy test, just PRAYING that it would be negative. (and it was. whoooo.)So I know how you felt!
ReplyDeleteHappy new year!
EEK! what a cruel, cruel joke from that test manufacturer!! :)
ReplyDeletehappy new year!
xo,
erika
What a rush of emotions I'm sure that was for you! I'll never buy a test from Target! ;)
ReplyDeleteWhew! I did one of those this morning, too, and had a mix of emotions with the negative. But I don't think I'm ready for three. My results were more clear, though. I have to say, that's the worst intuitive design I've seen at Target!
ReplyDeleteOkay, so seeing as how you had Ivy five weeks before I had Wyatt, you just had me freaking out thinking that I might be needing to count the weeks on my calendar too! My goodness girlfriend! How fun would that be? :)
ReplyDeleteAaah! relieved as you are there must be a little spot in your heart that is a little sad. I am sorry for you moment of disappointment!
ReplyDeleteI had a friend that her firth baby was after her son was 3 moths old andnthey were shock!!
ReplyDeleteanything could happen
Happy new year!
Goodness. I did that in June... twice. The first box I threw away ...thinking "I know how this works". When I got home and took the test the two lines showed up. I went to town and bought another box... this time I read the instructions ... you are right TWO LINSE DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN PREGNANT!
ReplyDeleteWe just had a similar "scare" yesterday too! I was getting ready to go buy a test since I have been feeling queasy and I was late, but I started today, much to our relief. I know we are not done yet though, because both of us were just a little bit sad anyways...but still relieved!
ReplyDeleteHey and email me if you still need help with your Bum Genius. Make sure you get a diaper sprayer too; it makes the big pooops Ivy will have later MUCH easier to clean :)
ReplyDeleteYou made me hold my breath......wow. 5 would be good but this early....maybe not.
ReplyDeleteHoly cow!
ReplyDeleteGasp--hold breath--big eyes---no way---exhale...
ReplyDeleteWith a post like that you need some kind of disclaimer. You nearly gave me a heart attack. :)
WOW! My heart stopped too! No way! And you have had time to be romantic? Jealous! Not giving too much here but I have not felt romantic in MONTHS!! So no way I'm getting pregnant!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I would be freaking out also! Holy moly woman!!! Totally scary.
ReplyDeleteI HATE pregnancy tests. I've only ever taken two. One negative, one positive- my son! :) I refuse to take them until I've had morning sickness for three days in a row.
ReplyDeleteYikes! I've had a few of those moments - I am very thankful now to not have it be a cause for concern :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I just started reading your blog a while ago - found you had a daughter a month younger than mine... and then to see the two lines show up?? My heart dropped into my stomach for you! :) Too funny!
ReplyDeleteoh wow! lol. I'd be freaking!
ReplyDeleteYou had my heart beating as well. I've done the same thing. We just have "mother of young children" syndrome. Symptoms are very similiar to pregnancy.
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! I thought you were saying you were. Baby Sister is only four months old and I know I would not want to be pregnant now (and we do want more). Well, congratulations on the negative result.
ReplyDeleteI think you got all of us! Wow! I can't imagine that :)
ReplyDeleteWhoa...I think my pulse raced just a bit for you. Wow.
ReplyDeleteWOW!! I was holding my breath!
ReplyDeleteOh my word. WOW. That would have been, well. WOW. I hope you are relieved. I AM! LOL.
ReplyDeletei took that same test and wanted to be pregnant, and wasn't yet w/ this baby. i'm certain of God's timing, but that test broke my heart for a few minutes because i thought the 2 lines was a positive result!
ReplyDeletei hear after 4 kids, it really isn't that difficult to add more. = ) but, if you're happy, i'm happy for you!
Ack! I can't BELIEVE THIS. Who do they think they are, anyway?! I was a little worried there:)
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I'm glad everything turned out the way you wanted, but I held my breath for a minute there.
ReplyDeleteThat type of test is evil. Another friend of mine had the exact same first reaction. It was only when she went back and reread the instructions that she caught her mistake. She VERY much did NOT want to be pregnant.
Yeah...if I were you, I would definitely be saying WHEW. Not for lack of love of babies, but um...for adjustment sake :)
ReplyDeleteHugs to you on your double line adventure. I think I would be writing to Target to complain that their tests are SO different and scared the you know what out you.
ReplyDeleteHoly cow! My heart was in my throat for a minute there.
ReplyDeleteAnd I will SO never buy that brand.
I think I just got sick to my stomach and was imagining myself in your shoes. OMG you scared me.
ReplyDeleteThis is too funny. I had been feeling really sick and I took a test on Levi's 3 month b-day and guess what I got two lines also. Well I knew it was wrong in mu gut. So I calle dmy midwife and she said she didn't think it could be . Well I went to the doctor last week and it was wrong. Did and ultrasound and everything no sac or nothing. So sometimes those home tests are wrong. Not that yours was just funny that we both had the same kind of scare. I think I kind of feel the same way as you not sure I want to be tinkling on those sticks anymore.
ReplyDeleteOh that was SO not right! But you did have me going!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh-this exact thing happened to me about a month ago-and I have a four month old!! Those darn Target pregnancy tests! I would've died!!
ReplyDeleteOh My Gosh! My heart was racing also. Ha!!! I thought, my goodness, she is a fertile myrtle!!! Ha!!! I guess I'm glad you're not?! Ha! So glad you posted this.... gave me an adrenaline rush for the night!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI know that feeling--not sure if you want a positive or a negative. Enjoy Ivy while she's little.
ReplyDeleteThat is an odd test! I have never heard of two lines meaning you are not pregnant! Give yourself a little time. Ivy is so little, but I am sure you could handle another one in due time :).
ReplyDeleteToni
Yikes! That's a scary moment, but I'm sure you would make a great mom of 5 as well.
ReplyDeleteoh my! that would have got me going too... dang target test! :)
ReplyDeletebrittany
Don't scare me like that! Ahhh! I had to re-read that post twice to double-check that you weren't pregnant. Holy shnicky!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL - Oh, Memories!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt took us 2 years to get pregnant with Ali, and I probably took at least 789 tests.
When I finally took the positive one, I read it the opposite way that you did - it had two dashes and I was looking for a plus and a dash. I went on for three more days thinking that I WASN'T pregnant. . . 'till one day I was feeling especially bad and my boss, of all people, suggested that I take a pregnancy test (he knew we had been trying for so long). I went home, got the other one out of the package, was on my way to the bathroom reading the label, and all of a sudden realized I had read the first one wrong. I shrieked so loudly. . .and knew that I had baby brains before I knew I was even pregnant!!!
:)
Thanks for sharing and bringing back fun memories!!
Oh my! I bet you went insane!! I have a 10 week old and I fear that post-pregnancy fertility!
ReplyDeleteOh, my heart was racing. I took one yesterday too! It was easy-it said simply "pregnant" or "not pregnant." It was the simplest one I've ever taken.
ReplyDeleteAnd it said "not pregnant." Yea!
Just impressed that you have time to "do the deed!" ; )
ReplyDeleteI was jealous and nervous all at the same time! I had a similar situation last week and breathed a HUGE sigh of relief when it was negative. I guess that tells me how I feel about that right about now.
ReplyDeleteSo...I was going to visit your blog and comment just to troll for blog hits, but this was a real coincidence! I have a 5 month old and there is a chance I might be pg too! I am not brave enough to get a test yet though. I UCed my last, btw.
ReplyDeleteAnd I was getting all ready to say "Congratulations". It's easy to laugh when it's not me taking the test...I have 2 that are 17 months apart exactly and I remember what went through my head then....with a 3 mo old baby I can't even imagine :)
ReplyDeleteI lost my heart for a second there. You definitely got a lot of people on that one you little stinker. :o)
ReplyDeleteOMG! I just now saw this and I was freaking! Wow. What a rollercoaster minute or so that must have been for you!
ReplyDeleteOMG that's so funny...took me a minute to figure out that your not :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations though..on not being pregnant. :) For now anyways...
whew....oh my....i felt that FOR YOU :) Well i'm happy for you that you are relieved...and i'm sure you're aware of your options already....but the IUD has been GREAT for me (I've had it since after delivering Levi in 2007) and have had no side effects or issues....I got the non-hormonal Paragard. Just in case you were considering it. :) Good luck either way hon your kids are AMAZING! :) And your blog is SO fun to read! :)
ReplyDeleteStephanie, haven't been around for a while and was freakin' out all along the post. Are we supposed to congratulate for NOT being pregnant? :)
ReplyDeleteI have two contests running on my blogs, which are easy to join. Make sure to check them out.
Thanks!
Sanna
I am not kidding when I say this happened to me too! Apparently they don't make tests like they used to! We are a few days away from having baby number 6 and when you want to see two lines, this test really sucks!
ReplyDeleteThey need to standardize those things, to help a mama out!
ReplyDeleteI know you would have been just fine, but you deserve a little more time to adjust to the "right now" and savor those sweet 4.
Hugs,
Steph
Oh, Steph! The same thing happened to my sister-in-law a few years ago! But she didn't check the box until AFTER she told my brother and they had already gone into frantic mode about how they were going to swing another child! Haha! I think the company behind that particular test likes to play pranks on people. :)
ReplyDeleteJane
That is a very trick test! I've never seen one with results like that either! sheesh! Target, what were you thinking???
ReplyDeleteI second your Mom's emotion... I was waiting for "It's due before Ivy's first birthday!"
ReplyDeleteBUT... either way is wonderful!
OH. MY. WORD. That was a great post!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! That will make your heart skip a few beats.
ReplyDeletemy heart would have stopped dead. wow...this is a really funny post. : )
ReplyDeleteDang it. that's a confusing test!
ReplyDeleteFor a second there I really thought you were too! WOW!
ReplyDeleteI have totally had that same moment before. Funny!
ReplyDeleteBut, I'm not quite ready to say I don't ever want to take that test again. :)
Oh my word! What a nasty trick Target played on you!!!
ReplyDeleteYou must have been scared out of your wits!!! Of course children are always a blessing, but to have them so close together would be very stressful for anyone! My Dad and my aunt are only 12 months apart and I don't know how my grandmother did it!!!
ReplyDeleteI know all babies are blessings sent from God, but I was feeling super exhausted for ya!!!
ReplyDeleteMoral of the story that we have been taught since grade school...always read the directions!!
Oh-My-Word .... great post!!! I would be totally freaked out too, for many many reasons. Mainly though because it would mean going from 6 kids to 7 (or maybe even 8 if we had twins again *gasp*).
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Shera
Yikes! You sure had me going!
ReplyDeleteIn case you ever want to get a bunch of super cheap, very accurate and sensitive tests, Early Pregnancy Tests on Ebay are awesome. I think I got 25 for $7. I used 5 with this little one, just because I didn't believe it! It's nice to have them on hand, for those anxious moments.
Oh my gosh, my heart totally skipped a beat for a minute there! I'll need some time to recover from this one...LOL
ReplyDeletePS--all those hormone fluctuations postpartum always leave me feeling nauseous and run-down, too. The lack of sleep may also have something to do with it!
ReplyDeleteI've been there before not after the 4th but still with a 3 month old. I never want to take one of those tests again either!
ReplyDeleteOh wow!! I'd have demanded the box too!!
ReplyDeleteOh Steph, I'm with you. I want never to take another one of those (yet I imagine I will...). But my saga with pregnancy tests is fodder for another post (half drafted actually...).
ReplyDeleteOh good greif! I was thinking, "But the baby is soooo little...". A false alarm like that would have me wet myself despite having just POS. :P
ReplyDeleteWOW! I've never seen a test quite like that. I hope that it's good news for you?
ReplyDeleteI am expecting baby number 6 in just a few weeks and we were quite surprised by this news, I will admit that they were not all happy thoughts but now I am very excited! And will figure out the routine with three under three (I hope!)
ReplyDeleteWhoa,I'm sure that was a shock... Children are always a blessing though...I always pray for a little space though. :)
ReplyDeleteHope you're feeling better!
The SAME thing happened to me after my first one. It was a little scary that soon after. Congratulation on a negative! ;)
ReplyDeleteYour title and the photos really threw me for a loop! I thought that you might be announcing #5. It must be tough to think about making that "final" decision.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh Steph!!!! I was kinda freaking out too!!! WOW. THAT is exactly the reason I only use the Pregnant - Not Pregnant digital tests! WHEW!!!
ReplyDeleteOH MY WORD! That would have been so crazy for you LOL Gotta enjoy that Ivy girl first, right? ;)
ReplyDeleteNell
Not laughing at you--just with you~! ;o)
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Oh my gosh I just had to do the same thing! I'm happy to say I got a negative also. I know we will have a #3 but definately not any time soon!
ReplyDeleteWow that gave me such a start!
ReplyDeleteI recently assisted at a birth for a repeat client who had her second baby on her first baby's first birthday. (that was a mouthful)
Ya know, I don't like these newer tests much.
How did I miss this!?!? Esp since we were talking about it on Twitter. LOLOLOL!!
ReplyDeleteSee, I've only taken the ones that make the "+" sign, so when I saw the first picture, I was all, "Where is the 2nd line? I can't see it!?!" Pfffft.
Girl... you got me hehe. Actually, though I was like, Steph would be an excellent mother to 5. You are just so graceful and how neat to have them so close. Then of course I look on the other side and start panicking for you until I kept reading on in the blog post.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago, I had a Target test turn up negative...about 35 weeks later, Woggie was born. I vowed to never take a Target test again. :-)
ReplyDeleteOMG.. I just spit my soda across the desk... You know I took a simular test and I had thrown away the box (I mean seriously as many tests as Ive taken you'd think Id know if It was positive or not) and needless to say I thought those two lines meant positive and I sat on the floor freaked out for a good three hours and got the courage to call Chris at work and he rushed home in his police car (how heroic) with new tests... and again two lines... so then we both thought I was pregnant we flipped out in that omg... how are we going to do this again so early mode... and when he came home from work he was actually sort of excited.
ReplyDeleteNext day I looked at the box in passing.. and you know.. I was really sad... damn those tests.
Wow! I thought the 2 lines meant a new baby. Well, I guess it was a certainly a way to bring in the new year! relax, sip to drinks and call me in the morning! lol!
ReplyDelete
