those metal trash cans u can find at target or walmart work well 2! i have a diaper pail from www.kidalog.net that works great.. but i wish it was a hair bigger

ReplyDeleteYou can use the large wet bag in lieu of a diaper pail if you'd like. It's what we do for daycare.
You may eventually want a hemp insert or two for nighttime diapering. They soak up like crazy. But you can wait and see if Ivy needs that.
You look all set. We love cloth diapering and I felt just like you when I was getting started. Best of luck. Oh and we think Thirsties are the BEST!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAre those the bumgenious all-in-ones or pocket diapers? If they are pockets, you many want a few extra inserts later for night time use. You can use the prefolds as an extra insert too, but they are bulkier.
ReplyDeleteYou may want a diaper sprayer that hooks to the toilet. It's similar to the sprayer on your kitchen sink and it's great to rinse an especially messy diaper. :) Right now, you most likely won't need that since Ivy's breastfed!
Baby bits dissolved in water makes a great wipe solution if you're using cloth wipes. I keep it in a mini spray bottle for use on the go. Just spray baby's bottom and wipe with a dry wash cloth! You can also use it as a disinfectant spray for your hands (instead of "germ gel") and to spray things like restaurant tables and shopping cart handles! It's all purpose!!!
How exciting! You'll be amazed how much those prefolds quilt up after you wash them several times.

We don't use a diaper pail, either. We use the large wetbag and just toss it in the wash with the diapers! It makes it so easy.

ReplyDeleteI highly recommend a diaper pail. I have a small wicker hamper from Target and I use a Blueberry liner/wetbag inside... Because the hamper has a lid, it looks nice in our bathroom without screaming, "Dirty diapers in here!" :) We used just a large wetbag for a while, but having one of those lying around can get annoying. Like I said, I highly recommend a pail.
I cannot even begin to tell you what a lifesaver our diaper sprayer has become! It's SO helpful. Like the above reader said, Ivy's poo won't really need to be sprayed off now, but whenever you start her on solids, you will be very relieved to have a sprayer.
And, lastly, I'm a huge advocate of cloth wipes! You can buy them specially made, but we have found that simple wascloths do the trick. Baby Bits are nice but an easier way to do solution is simply to fill a spray bottle with water and several drops of teatree oil and calendula oil. My son is 17 months old and I still haven't had to buy new bottles of oil - Baby Bits don't last that long! We just spray the wascloth with the solution and wipe away! It works great!
Besides that, it looks like you're covered! Congrats on beginning your cloth diapering journey! I LOVE it and I'm sure you will, too!
We also just use a large hanging pail (Goodmama brand as they are not only stylish but have the best sewn handle; other ones have broken!) and toss it in with each wash. It hangs on LB's door knob and matches the nursery. Very swanky AND easy! WIN!

Ivy will have the best dressed bum in the neighborhood. What a blessed little girl! Designer diapers...what will they think of next? These are adorable.

ReplyDeleteWhat are you doing for overnights? I found that I had to stuff 3 or 4 prefolds into a pocket dipe to get through the night without leaks, but then mine were/are heavy wetters at night. A good thick wool cover also works overnight to keep away leaks. Of course if you get some wool then you'll need a little bottle of wool wash and some lanolin too.

ReplyDeleteThe only thing is that Charlie's Soap does not work well for me. I don't know if its a combo of my son's urine/our water, but they really stunk after a bit. I use Planet detergent and that works so much better. You don't the the stinky pads (even after they are washed)!

ReplyDeleteThe only things I see missing are a pail and liner (I use a plastic kitchen trash can and an pail liner from Swaddlebees) and some cloth wipes. Why buy disposable wipes when you're already doing laundry? I prefer my wipes to be one side flannel, one side velour. Velour is a great poop grabber. (-: Let me know if you have any questions. BG OS are my favorite dipes, by far. (-: Good luck!!! Can't wait to hear how it goes!
I'd also suggest diaper sprayer and possibly a cloth-friendly diaper cream in case of a rash.

ReplyDeleteI'm gonna chime in and agree that the diaper sprayer is a must-have once she starts solids. We went with out on for the first year but now that I've used on for 4 months, I can't imagine life without it. Ours is the BumGenius one and it was super easy to install. The hubby tried fashioning something with parts from Lowes originally but gave up. This took him less than 5 minutes to install and it works like a dream.

I too was so excited when I first bought mine, only a few months ago and yesterday I was so excited because I finished making (with my own hands) my first wool soaker!!!! It is far from perfect but I like it and my little guy seems to also!

I know what you mean! I experimented with some CD'ing (borrowed Swaddlebees and Blueberries from my neighbor) last month with K to see if I could do it with the newbie and I was so excited to wash (but there was no poop....I wonder if I would have been excited if there was poop?).
ReplyDeleteI loved CDing m little man but what I loved best was ECing. We started CDing at just over a year (ECing at the same time) and within 2 months he was in underwear. I want to have another baby just to use my diapers again. Enjoy.

I use bumgenius with our 5 month old baby. I love them!!! Whenever she has a big poopy it almost always leaks out on a disposable, but not with BG! When your baby is a little bigger you can use the newborn liner with the regular liner for over night. That is enough for our 2 y/o over night. Good luck!!! FYI, Purex Free and Clear is a great detergent for cloth diapers and it's cheap too!!!
ReplyDeleteOkay, haven't read the comments so forgive me if this is redundant! I would suggest looking into some cloth wipes - SO much easier than you think.
ReplyDeleteAlso, when my girls were in prefolds, I liked to use some kind of liner/doubler with a microfleece topper to keep their skin nice and dry. You won't need them in the bGs because the suedecloth inner will keep her skin dry, but prefolds are just cotton and do nothing to wick moisure away from the skin. And I only ever used a hanging wet bag, no pail and liner.

ReplyDeleteOh, and one more thing. Some people, not everyone, have trouble with Charlies soap. I think it has to do with following the directions. Like if you're going to use it for her diapers, you'll have to use it for everything, since any other detergent in your machine could mess with it. Some moms have reported a burn like rash from Charlies. Just a heads up! It does work well for a lot of people though.
Diaper pail and liner, which has already been said, but also some sort of cloth bag to use as a diaper pail when you are out and about. You may also want to purchase a few extra cloth prefolds. You can use those suckers for anything: as diapers, as diaper wipes, as extra inserts for pocket diapers, as dust rags, etc.
ReplyDeleteAnother consideration, if you like to sew, would be to look up some patterns for cloth diapers online. That way, you can tailor your diapers to your child's body and your sense of style exactly down the road.

We LOVE our Bum Genius cloth diapers - and I was the same way....giddy when I was about to wash them. Okay, that wore off a bit, but I still love the diapers.
ReplyDeleteWe've also tried Charlie's soap, but I never used it exclusively in my washer so we still saw some detergent build-up. The best luck I've had when that happens is to use baking soda (liberally) and a drop or two of Dawn dishwashing liquid. Seriously! The Dawn seems to help breakdown any residues, and you'll need an extra rinse or two (an extra wash with no detergent helps), but then they are good to go!
I'm going to be picking up a few more diapers soon for baby on-the-way, since my daughter is still in them too. I love that they'll fit both girls! Oh, and those wetbags are too cute! I'm still giddy about my stylish wetbags.

we just started cloth diapering our 18 month old about a month ago and love it! After trying many different things I have found that using baking soda in the wash and vinegar in the rinse get the diapers much cleaner than just the detergent. We have a few bum genius and like them, but if you come across any swaddlebees they are amazing! So soft and comfy. We put my son in a nighttime disposable and the other day he touched his bottom and made a face! He missed his soft swaddlebees diaper! Good Luck! ReplyDeleteI have been using All Free Clear (don't use very much, less than half of what's recommended)on my cloth dipes, including Bum Genius, for almost 9 months and it works for me! Occasionally, my sweet girl gets a very slight rash and I soak with baking soda. Works every time! I love the Bum G's and Thirsties!

I use Tide. I started off with Purex Free and Clear and then started to have some stink issues so I switched. I put 1/4 to 1/2 cup vinegar in my 2nd rinse and that really helps to get out the detergent - my diapers smell like nothing - not dirty nor like detergent.
