The other day I was recalling one of my "most embarassing" breastfeeding experiences. When Gray was just a newborn, hubby and I were at a wedding in a very large, old Catholic church. During the ceremony I needed to feed the baby, and since you could hear every little rustle or shoe click in that place, I thought I should take him in the back just in case he made too much noise. I walked into the first open room I found with a chair, sat down, and began nursing right away. I looked up, and to my horror- I was in the confessional! Now, I am not Catholic and have only seen these things in the movies, but I knew what it was and was afraid I would get thrown out of there if someone found out! I hopped up so quickly and searched for a less sacrilegious nursing area. When I got back to my seat I tried to whisper to hubby what had happened, but I got the church giggles and was laughing too hard! (This story originally published June 29, 2006)

Since having Ivy some of the wildest places I've nursed her is in the sling in the dentist's chair, sitting in the Star Wars aisle at Target, and while getting my hair colored, cut, and styled. I nursed Gray in the sling everywhere- even once while trying on jeans at the Gap!

    I nursed Luke in the sling at the Hollister outlet in Michigan City. You can imagine the looks from all the teenage girls!

  5. I've nursed in the wildest of places too. Once, with my oldest (now 7), my husband and I had gone to some sort of a Holistic Day. We were sitting in a dark room listening to some presentation about meditation or something and of course, the baby needed to nurse. He was young, and I was wearing one of those "NURSING SHIRTS" that had vertical slits on the mid/side of the shirt. He started to cry for some reason so I picked him up, put him over my shoulder and tip-toed out the room. I didn't bother to close the bra b/c I wanted to get out of the room quietly and quickly. (do you see where this is going?)

    .....yes, i stepped out of the room, closed the door, and there were people just outside looking at me, or at the baby, who knows. But seconds later I felt a breeze and realized that the nursing opening on the shirt was wide open and I was "SHOWING OFF!" haha

  6. Most embarrassing? Squirting milk across the pew at church.

    Most interesting? Well, Im nursing 4 right now so that's pretty interesting. I tandem nursed in the movie theater last week. And on the sidewalk in front of a coffee shop. And at a Japanese steakhouse. And then I've nursed trhem one at a time pretty much everywhere. It's become a necessity to nurse anywhere and everywhere now!

  7. I haven't been able to nurse while babywearing; I seem to need to provide some support to keep baby latched! So I'll have to check out your tips.

    As for interesting places...with Isaac I nursed him last week in the movie theater. With Silas, I nursed him on the train riding into Chicago.

    When Millie was a baby we were traveling in Asia a lot, so we nursed on planes, trains and automobiles! And no, I wasn't happy about the lack of safety...but when there are no seatbelts in the back of taxis, there's little choice in the matter!

  8. I've worn the baby while brushing my teeth and once while going to the bathroom in a public restroom I had no other alternative, but it worked. I never was good at nursing in the sling but I once nursed my 2nd baby while walking through the grocery store shopping for food. Just had a blanket over the top of him and my hubby and oldest were with me. I pointed to things we needed and he pushed the cart and put the items in! I wish I would of been able to nurse in a sling then I could of had free hands :)

  9. I nursed J. at a doctor's appointment while I had all those sticky wire things stuck to my chest (for an EKG or something), she yanked one off and threw it on the floor. I nursed A. while waiting for an ultrasound for my first glimpse of J. No really embarrasing moments, except the many many times I've been in public places with very noticable lactation spots quickly forming on my shirt, that always happens in the most awkward situations.

  10. That's pretty amazing. Yesterday we were at the mall and having lunch. Our mall just opened so there were thousands of people there and no tables. We decided to share a kids' table with another family. So we were like eighteen inches off the ground, sitting in little mini chairs that were made to look like frogs and I had to nurse in front of all those people, and so ravenous I went ahead and ate my sandwich and helped my daughter cut up her food. It was one of those moments where I wished I could have seen myself. The other family tried to avoid looking at us (on account of the breastfeeding).

  11. Bryant Park in NYC in the snow... that was an interesting nursing session. Nursed on an airplane during takeoff in a cramped row with 2 strangers.... ummmm awkward. The confessional is pretty funny though.

  12. The weirdest was probably nursing Roo in the chair at the dentist while I was getting my teeth cleaned. Interestingly, Roo has never had a problem with going to the dentist!

  13. My oddest nursing moment was when we were on our way home on a four hour road trip, thirty minutes from home, and Dacey was screaming to be nursed (she was four months at the time). Neither Kyle nor I wanted to stop, and since I was sitting next to her in the backseat, I just leaned forward and over and nursed her in the carseat.

    Nursing while trying on jeans? You are totally my hero.

  14. I nursed my first child at my graduation... - in the very anti-baby environment of post-graduate academia I whipped my baby under the billowing folds of my cloak, mid ceremony!

    And my fifth can truly say he has nursed on the streets of London. We went there on holiday and weren't going to stop our excited dash for anything... outside Buckingham Palace, on Trafalger Square, in the National Gallery, on the tube - if there is a tourist spot he has nursed there!

  16. I nursed my oldest at a SF Giants game! The older gentleman next to me thought he was sleeping. :)
    My second, and third I nursed in the concourse of a basketball arena. As people walk by they smile, and then when the realize what you are doing it is funny to see them immediately look uncomfortable - or just look away!
    And, a couple weeks ago I nursed my third in the Starbucks at Target - just me and the two guys working! A bit awkward.

  20. One time when we were traveling back from visiting family for the holidays, we stopped at a motel. My hubby was unloading the car and I went into the motel with the dogs (two minature dachshunds) and nursed the baby.

    Somehow my hubby managed to leave the door open a crack and the dogs ran out. So I chased after the dogs while nursing the baby with my shirt halfway off and everything exposed.

    Let's just say that the people I ran by in the parking lot got a show.

  21. I nursed my son in the back of a moving car by leaning forward over the car seat. We were both safe, he was happy and we were able to keep moving so we could get to my families house faster.

  22. Last night I nursed my Daileyanne in the middle of an Air Force Change of Command ceremony. 80 people, military decorum and a 2 ton Hummer with arsenal 20 feet away be darned my baby was hungry! Husband even took a picture that's posted Here!

  25. Boy, I've babyworn and nursed everywhere! Church, on the street, at parties, in Arlington National Cemetery, on the Metro in D.C., my grandmother's funeral...yeah, that's just to name a few! LOVE IT!

  26. I wasn't nursing, but pumping in the bathroom at church for the first time soon after my son was born. A huge spider came out from behind the commode, and I exited that stall so fast, still attached to my pump with my breast totally exposed. My pastor's wife and another lady (NOT a close friend) came in the bathroom just at that time. Thankfully someone killed the spider so I could finish pumping in privacy.

  27. Fun post! I've also nursed at a Target toy aisle, but it was the princess aisle, not the Star Wars. I thought I was being all discreet and then I looked up and saw all the security cameras in the ceiling. Oh well!
    With my first I was a working/pumping mom and I have pumped in all kinds of random places when traveling for business. Multiple airport bathrooms, trendy restaurant bathrooms, rental cars and office bathroom stalls.
    Oh the things we do for our babies!

    I used bathrooms and back seats of cars frequently.
