I've certainly not been in want for things to write about this week. Check me out and all my beauty first thing in the morning in the video below, talking about some babywearing hot topics.
And I'm discussing a general rule of thumb for babywearing here at Chicago Moms Blog today, too.
Soon the excitement will simmer and we'll think it wasn't worth much of the fuss... but I'm a writer and a babywearer and I feel like I'm just reportin' the news here, folks.

I'm so disappointed in Motrin, this ad insults not just babywearing moms, but all moms. We don't need any status symbols to make us feel "official". Bad form, Motrin.

I went to motrin's site to watch their video and it wouldn't work. I wonder if it's my computer of if they took it down?
ReplyDeleteInteresting controvery, no?
I've been babywearing since Ladybug was born 17+ months ago. I get asked all the time if she's too heavy to carry 'that way' or if my back hurts. Like you said, the only time babywearing hurts is if you're doing it wrong.
Thanks for sharing, Steph! I loved seeing Ivy in your video!
Well said, Steph.
ReplyDeleteI watched it, too, and was very disappointed in the tone and wording of the commercial. Just poor taste...
Oh, Ivy! She is getting so big already!! :(
I like your line that Motrin might have caused their own headache! It will be interesting to see how Motrin does or does not respond.
ReplyDeleteI've loved reading all your posts this week on babywearing.
Wow, I had not idea the bjorn was baby for their hips and pelvis-I love it for when the guys were newborns, but after the 10 lb mark it is uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am very disappointed with the tone of the commercial. I'll have to put up more babywearing pics and blog about it tomorrow. Bad, Motrin, Bad!
I hope you feel confident about your bed head. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, the chaos around this ad will be over soon, but it's good to take this chance to share your stance and the meaning behind it. It's not about fashion. Or a trend. It's about a bond with your baby (not that you can't have that without wearing your baby...) But for you, me, and many others, it's recognized as a comfortable, easy and just plain GOOD way to live life with a tot.
Kudos for speaking up :)
Oh gosh, this is so frustrating and disheartening!
ReplyDeleteI am so grateful you brought it to our attention, and LOVE your video in reply. Is there any way we can post your video on our own blogs?
I just e-mailed Motrin sharing my opinion of this with them. I tried calling, too, but it's not "regular business hours", so I will call back tomorrow morning FIRST THING.
I just love your vlogs. And it's even nice to see you fresh starting the day without putting yourself together. You're beautiful. :) And I agree very much with all that you said. And even though I have never cared much for the snuggli/bjorn type of carrier it also bugs me when people tell those mommas that they aren't babywearing.
ReplyDeleteThank you for keeping everyone up to date and moving forward with positive babywearing vibes despite Motrin's negative twist on things!
ReplyDeleteI saw all those tweets, too, and wondered what on earth was going on!! Now that Kiddo is almost 2 and nearly 35 pounds, I no longer wear him, but it wasn't that long ago that I did! My favorite was a pouch sling. I certainly plan on wearing any future babies I might have!
ReplyDeleteSteph, the thing I really love about your video is that you stay positive! No matter how many angry moms are out there, you are sticking to the facts, and making moms feel secure and comfortable. You always seem to find a way to say things as to not offend, and that is so refreshing. (I'm thinking about how you mentioned Baby Bjorn carriers, and explained WITHOUT bashing them, how they can be uncomfortable and not so good for the baby.)
ReplyDeleteWish I could look that cute when I first wake up! ; )
ReplyDeleteI was pretty miffed by the ad. I found it quite condescending actually. According to the girls on twitter it's off of their site now...
Thanks Steph for keeping us in the know about baby wearing stuff! All I can think is how much MORE pain I would be in without baby wearing :-)
ReplyDeleteCheck out our morning post at:

Sorry, no picture of me, just sweet baby mary and how much I love waking up next to her.
Every time I watch it I'm reminded as to how offensive it really is. :( (the motrin ad that is)
ReplyDeleteLove you video!! You opinion matters to lots of people and I think you presented it in a very fair and reasonable way.
ReplyDeleteLots of love ;)
Ya jerk! You're even gorgeous first thing in the morning! ;-)
ReplyDeleteAnd very well said, by the way. I never wore my baby a day in my life (although I did a lot of holding and carrying) but that was way out of line. ANY mother should be offended, not just babywearing moms.
Totally meant to say:
ReplyDeleteLove youR video!! YouR opinion matters to lots of people and I think you presented it in a very fair and reasonable way.
Lots of love ;)
Guess that's what happens when you're holding your baby when you type. Letters end up missing ;)
Keep up the comments!. You bet Motrin will be listening and maybe you'll be included in their next commercial with your side of babywearing. The old geri pack carriers were hard on your back because that's where they carried. Slings are wonderful and I wish they were available when I had babies.
ReplyDeleteGreat video, Steph. I'm not easily offended either and I didn't think it was THAT big a deal in the grand scheme o' things but yeah, obviously unpopular PR!!!
