It is so hard.
But, the past couple days, every time I eat my precious celery, it makes me feel weird and kind of warm in my face and numb in my head and, um, this is not good. I have found conflicting info about high celery consumption online and really am too exhausted from this wean to look any further. Common sense says that when something starts to make you feel bad after eating it, you should not eat it.
So.
There are like 4 stalks in my fridge. Primo organic goodness that I am craaaaaaaaaving. I want it and need it now. I have been eating about 1-2 stalks (there's one stalk per bag) a day. And now, I must have none.
The Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich I just ate was nice, but lacks the crunch.
Send your thoughts my way.
Thank you.
Wow, really? That is so strange! Yes, you best stop eating it then. That would really scare me if a food made me feel that way. I'm sorry hun. To give up something you love so much isn't easy.
ReplyDeletenot being a fan of celery (at all), i could never understand your love affair. i am sorry you have to give it up, but i think skinny cows are a great replacement. ;)
ReplyDeletedr brown's cel-ray soda might be okay and help satisfy your cravings. it's worth trying.
ReplyDeleteI cannot imagine craving celery. But giving up any craving is a miserable proposition. So you have my utmost sympathy.
ReplyDeletePut your skinny cow inside of a taco shell.
ReplyDelete:)
ugh...that's terrible. the crunch factor is huge to me. *munching on a box of RAW macaroni.* =) (seriously.) so sorry for you!
ReplyDeleteOh! It is so hard not to give into cravings. I hate that for you. BP (before pregnancy) I would occasionally get a taste for hummus, and it almost always gives me that tingly, burny kind of feeling in my mouth that I don't think is good!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a pretty wild reaction to a seemingly healthy craving! I feel for you though. Pregnancy cravings are nasty if you can't give into them. Maybe soon your body will come up with a replacement craving!
ReplyDeleteI love celery and I feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteThat's strange that it would make you feel like that. I don't know what you could replace it with. What about fresh coconut. It has a good crunch to it.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I never attempted to give up my love of ice during pregnancy, you are brave, and I feel for ya! Hang in there brave one!
ReplyDeleteAw, that's too bad. That is just awful that you have such a healthy craving and you have to deprive yourself. I hope you come up with something good to take it's place. Apples, maybe?
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I've never heard of a celery reaction. Maybe for the crunch you should make a jicama salad.
ReplyDeletewow, that's a bit weird. But completely agree with your decision. Have you ever tried pizza rolls? They worked like a charm when I was preggo....
ReplyDeleteno, on second thought, I don't recommend that.
Hopefully, this craving will quickly be replaced. Mine never lasted too long and then I moved onto the next one. It's too bad about the celery, at least it was healthy. Have you tried cucumbers? I have heard that is another good one because it has a bit of crunch and it's also cold. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteVeggie Chips?
ReplyDeleteStop eating celery for 2 weeks and then try eating it again but in small servings. I like the suggestion of eating jicama or see if anyone grows hakuri turnips - you tried one last year.
ReplyDeleteHow awful! Garlic did that to me when I was pregnant. It made for a fairly miserable nine months food-wise, as garlic or garlic powder is in pretty much everything (except, thankfully, ice cream).
ReplyDeleteHopefully you can find something to replace the celery or tolerate it in smaller doses.
What about shredded cabbage? It's kinda sweetish and crunchy. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteShoot. Well, jicama is a good idea. Or how about cold cucumber spears?
ReplyDeleteUgh...you're crazy girl! Celery?! Honestly?! AS you can tell I've never liked celery but I can understand how frustrating it is to not be able to eat something you're craving while pregnant. I always had a love affair with ice chips, cubes, ect. One time I even had the Hubs go through the McDonalds ( even though I preferred Taco Bells ice cubes...) drive through just for a cup of ice- seriously! They gave it to me too- no charge. ;) Maybe you could try munching on some ice- it's pretty low cal. =)
ReplyDeleteOkay... since I just finished researching for some of my midwifery assignments I decided to see what I could find. Try this:
ReplyDelete"Celery contains active compounds called pthalides, which can help relax the muscles around arteries and allow those vessels to dilate. With more space inside the arteries, the blood can flow at a lower pressure. Pthalides also reduce stress hormones, one of whose effects is to cause blood vessels to constrict. When researchers injected 3-n-butyl phthalide derived from celery into laboratory animals, the animals' blood pressure dropped 12 to 14 percent. Of course, injection of a celery extract into laboratory animals is very far from food consumption by humans, and the researchers participating in this as yet unpublished study cautioned against overindulging in celery until clinical trials could be conducted with food and humans. But the potential helpfulness of this already nourishing food in lowering blood pressure seems likely, and it doesn't hurt that celery ranks as a very good source of potassium and a good source of calcium and magnesium, because increased intake of these minerals has also been associated with reduced blood pressure."

I'm guessing maybe your BP is dropping and hence the tingly-ness. Aren't you around 28 weeks now? Your blood volume increases dramatically during this time and perhaps the combination of tons o' celery lowering your BP and your increased blood volume is a tad too much?
HUGS!
Oh, and I was going to suggest pineapple for the crunchy. It has that crunchy yet stringy texture. :) I hope you can find a substitute for your Organic Yumminess of Celery!
ReplyDeleteYes if it is making you feel bad and numb I would stop. But what a bummer that you are craving it. That's got to be hard!
ReplyDeletehey totally not a big deal at all but i read your blog through google reader but nothing ever comes up except for the titles of the posts. any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteSkinny Cows are so good. I think you've traded up.
ReplyDeleteOooooooooooo I second jicama! YUMMY! I was on an avocado binge a little while back - I ate 20 of them in 3 weeks. Since then, none. The craving just went away. Maybe the same will happen for you and your dear celery?
ReplyDeleteThat stinks! Do you have to give it up completely? Can't you just cut way back on it?
ReplyDeleteIs it the crunch you crave? What about cucumbers? Or carrots?
Poor you! My biggest preggo craving was mushrooms of all things---perplexing---just like your celery obsession. :) Need a crunchy alternative? Maybe try jicama! Happy munching.
ReplyDeleteOh, bummer. Maybe give it a week or so and then try again. Maybe microwave popcorn would give you the crunch you crave. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteCelery? Seriously? I can't believe it would make you feel that bad. What if you take the strings off? Maybe they are just too hard to digest?
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sorry you have to give this love up - it is crisp and refreshing. What about cucumbers? They could be a nice alternative. The english ones are particularly nice.
Are carrots too sweet?
ReplyDeleteJicama ("jie-cam-bah" is how I say it in my head as I write it) is another great alternative.
I say just eat more skinny cows and those celery cravings should go away really fast! At least they would for me!
ReplyDeleteInteresting! Praying for your cravings....
ReplyDeleteLori
I wish I had something new to offer but it seems like most people have covered the crunchy snacks I could think of. My personal obsession this time around is watermelon. I don;t know what I would do if I had to give it up!
ReplyDeleteNot to freak you out completely but I am allergic to celery and it makes me feel all weird when I eat it.
ReplyDeleteI'd stop eating it until you can find out if the feelings you are having when you consume it are normal (like what busybusymomma said!), or an allergic reaction.
Especially since you are with baby and all....
And I liked the idea of putting a skinny cow treat in a taco shell....
I know I am taking the opposing side here, but I was considering your dilema while in the shower, when I had an "AHA!" The reason you are craving the celery is because it has something in it that you need. Possibly the iron. Your body knows this, and it knows where to get it. That is why you want it so bad. One or two stalks a day can not possibly be bad for you. I would be worried if you ate, like, 5-10 a day. I say keep it up! The weird feeling may be serotonin or other pleasure hormones being released because your body is getting what it wants. I'm not a doctor, though. Just someone who believes that her body knows best, especially when pregnant.
ReplyDeleteThat is weird. Maybe it will get better once you have the baby? I love celery too, but I also like Triscuits--they are crunchy and fibrous.
ReplyDeletebaby carrots...apples
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I'm not a celery fan. But what about raw broccoli? Carrot sticks have a good crunch. Raw green peppers do too...not so much crunch, but a bit of one. I craved raw spinach salads when I was pregnant. I loved Annie's Green Goddess organic dressing and would put that on spinach with a little bit of shredded cheese. Yummo.
ReplyDeleteyou'd rather eat celery than ice cream? wow girl, you are pregnant. :)
ReplyDeleteHmmm. During my first pregnancy, I craved tuna spread on white cake. (No worries, I didn't indulge, but it has certainly won me several nominations for "weirdest pg craving EVER!) Maybe you're just the one to give it a try. Let me know how it works out for you.
ReplyDeleteCelery... interesting. I wonder what that craving means your body feels it is lacking? Or maybe you just love the crunch. :)
ReplyDeleteMy odd craving.... cold beer. And I am NOT a beer drinker, ever. A glass of white wine now and then, yes, but never beer. Odd.
Celery over ice cream? Girrrl. Aww hang in there!
