Little Man

There are moments I look at Gray and think, how can it be possible we're going to have another baby soon? He's still such a baby! Those little toes and chubby feet still get me. But then, like when I came back from my trip, he looked so grown up. So mature, so un-babylike. His vocabulary can out talk most four-year-olds. (He's only two.) His smallness doesn't stop him and if anything, it gives him more to go on. Trust me, you don't mess with this kid.

For Mama, he is baby. He wants to nuggle. He needs to lay his head on my shoulder and whisper I love yous. Does he do this for himself or for me? Maybe a bit of both. My heart, oh these boys, what they do to this Mama's heart. I can't hide the fact that there are little bits of my heart just breaking into pieces.
They have to go and grow up. As much as it hurts, I love it. And as much as I try here, I can't possibly put into words how blessed I am to watch them become who they are becoming.

  1. Oh, this post just brought me to tears!
I am really starting to understand this. My oldest just turned 4, and my "baby" 1. How did it happen ALREADY?!
They grow up too fast. I try to treasure every hug and kiss, because I know one day, they won't come as freely to dear old mom.

  3. What a beautiful little boy! I have a "baby" who is 5 and is small and talkitive as well. My other baby will be 1 in June and my heart is breaking a little bit over it!

  4. That sums up my thoughts exactly...although I only have 1 boy so far...and he is not yet two...and he still is my baby too. But in 6 weeks there will be another baby! Time goes by so fast...I have to learn to treasure EVERY moment even more.

  6. Oh, I feel the same way! My Woggie is growing into such a little man and I'm not ready for it. I just can't imagine him being the big brother. He's my BABY!

  7. I know how you feel. I felt the same way with Nicky when I was pregnant with Zane. And I feel the same way about Zane now that we're pregnant with number three...he isn't even 18 months old yet!

It is so bittersweet when the baby takes on the new big boy role, isn't it? These years just go by too quickly!

  8. The other night I told Matt to stop growing up while thinking in my head, "My boys will never love another woman like they love their mommy." Oh boy, one day they will marry.

Let's cherish these moments while we can.

  9. Even when they become taller then you, you'll still look at them and think "oh my baby".

He looks so cute in that picture - such a big boy.

  12. Oh he is so darling! So glad to hear he likes to snuggle! I always imagined boys not wanting any hugs or kisses. Can't wait to snuggle with mine!

  13. I so know what you're saying - what I always find startling is how suddenly they stop being babies when the new baby comes home, how big they seem all at once.

  14. Hey Steph, one of my all time favorite saying is that a mother's job is to give her children roots and wings.

The roots? That's easy. It's the wings that break our hearts.

    He's precious! Enjoy every minute.

  15. He's looking so much like a boy instead of a toddler! It is sad, but not at the same time. I feel the same way about mine.

  17. You truly are very blessed. Don't worry about them growing up, cause they will always do things to make you feel blessed, even when they aren't doing anything.

  19. What a great post and ironic really because I was just in tears yesterday watching my son grow his wings and start to branch off to friends and such. At this point, he will always come back to Mommy for kisses and cuddles and it is my hopes that he will continue to do so as he grows older.

    Your son is beautiful!

  24. SNIFF SNIFF.. what a sweet sweet post.. Like the verse in Help them find there Wings.. I'll have tears as you take off, but I'll cheer as you fly.. They just grow so fast.. If I can't stop them from growing up I wish there was a way to at least slow it down some..

  29. He is absolutely adorable. I still consider my 3 year old to be a baby but knowing our new baby girl will be arriving in 3 months makes me realize just how grown up and independent she already is! It makes me so proud of her but at the same time I wish the time wouldn't pass so quickly.

  30. I could have written this, I feel the same about little Miles. He is just becoming a boy before my eyes, but still loves his mama. So sweet!

  31. Barry's Photography in LP? I grew up there! Had my senior pics taken there. Barry's, really?... ahh...the memories.
I love your blog because the little things remind me of home even though I don't get back there very much.
    Cute pic btw.
