Oh O

I've recapped Oprah's Favorite Things here, if you want to see my take on it. I found this year's episode hard to watch, to be honest.

The way the audience gets so unbelievably excited and on fire (or "on far" as Oprah would have said it in her Macon accent today) for these things, these things like bath-sized forty-dollar soaps and $190 lounge pants and a fridge that can tell you the weather forecast.

But how excited are we in our hearts about our spiritual life. Or our love life? You know, the things that, like, really matter?

  2. It's sort of nasty to see people getting all worked up about STUFF - and the audience is never made up of people who are in a particularily deprived group, either, so it's not like they don't already HAVE STUFF. Icky.

  3. Yeah but you know it's all for the ratings anyway...but come on, tell me you wouldn't want to be in the audience to win some of that stuff!? You could always give it away to charity or family members if you wanted to.

    Those gifts (money) could have definitely gone to some more deserving people. You know, people with absolutely nothing.

  5. I don't watch that show anymore. Like you said seeing people go crazy over things is no fun. Not to mention the jealousy I feel at not being to have all the stuff! I do better viewing the items onine rather than watching the show.

    Remember when she did away with this show a year or so ago after Katrina? It's funny how quickly she's jumped back into having it back. She must get so much $$ out of it endorsing products.

  6. You are so right Steph. The more stuff you have, the more stuff you want. Less is more. I still like to watch the peoples reactions and I wonder how they choose the audience for that show.

  11. Oh, I could not agree more! I rarely watch Oprah. Actually, I rarely watch TV anymore. However, Hubby was home today and he just happened to flip on the TV and this was on. I have to tell you, it was extremely difficult for me to watch...on so many levels.

    I told Hubby that it was making me want to simplify even more, our already simplified Christmas buying list. It really saddened me to watch it.

  12. I actually didn't watch the show for just that reason.
    Each year, I see all this STUFF I can't afford and it makes me feel kinda envious and materalistic. Like awesome for everyone there, but I know that I'll never afford (or want to spend) $50 on a few cupcakes or a $$$ set of PJs. It is an icky feeling.
    And you are completely right that it is just plain shallow to get that worked up about THINGS.

    In years past, like when she gave the gifts to Katrina workers, I felt good watching the show knowing some self-less people were getting treated.

    But, yeah it's lost its appeal.

  14. And that's why I'm trying to tell my husband's family NOT to get us anything for Christmas. We don't need "stuff" for the sake of celebrating a holiday, we've got plenty, thanks. I'd so much rather see them spend the money either on something they themselves need or (better yet) give it to charities and help people that need it more. Not to sound Scroogy, because I LOVE Christmas, but the "stuff" is starting to get on my nerves just a tad (and I'm hormonal right now, so feel free to ignore the ranting, lol).

  15. wow - neat that you posted this today. My family and I were just talking about how this Christmas we should buy gifts for children/families in need instead of for each other. We already have more than we could need so why not bless others? Its crazy what people will spend their money on! (And I agree, I'm not really a fan of most of the things on her list this year)

  17. I love this post, Steph. Each year I've watched Oprah's favorite things episode, it makes me cringe. So many of these people have what they NEED. So many out there do not. It breaks me heart that Oprah so willingly spends nearly $200 on ONE pair of pants, then for each audience member, while knowing what $200 could do for those who truly NEED. (Not to say she doesn't give to charity.)

  18. Ugh.. I am SO with you. It gives me a sick feeling in my stomach when I see Christmas commercials. I've been blogging about it.

    Take this or leave it - each person in my household gets 3 gifts for Christmas. (like the wise men?) That way, there's no fighting and no fixating on "the perfect gift"... just clothes, books, toys, etc.

  20. Ok, well, I'm posting again, having actually watched the show last night. It's great that Oprah likes to share the wealth with people, but yeah, this show has just gone way over the top. I remember when the favorite things show used to be fun, like you'd see Oprah introduce some new product that sounded really unique or interesting. Now it seems before she's even said what it IS, the crowd just breaks out into this obnoxious shouting and screaming. And did I actually see a woman praising the Lord with her hands up in the air? Oh no you didn't. There's no way a bar of soap could ever get me to raise my hands up in praise! Not even a $3000 refrigerator. But it did leave me wondering what a $59 box of cupcakes tasted like...

  21. I am always amazed at how idiotic the audience members look. I am actually embarrassed for them. I always wonder if they see themselves on TV and think how dumb they all look. I have the show on DVR but have yet to watch it. I'll probably just hit erase.

  22. I couldn't agree with you more. A big part of the reason I don't watch her anymore. Also the reason I don't watch the Today show. It's just ridiculous how the focus is always on what doesn't matter. So sad.

  23. I'd have to agree. How many people would be thankful for a new pair of $10 WalMart special pants. $190?! I just think it's above and beyond and just ridiculous. She does these amazing shows removing the veil off of America's poverty and showing just outside Chicago there are people going without running water but then she gives an audience full of people these trivial things. Why doesn't she instead put that money towards helping those less fortunate. I'd rather watch her do something like that. But I digress...
