O Christmas Tree, Why You Not Like Me?

I am just not in much of a Christmas decorating mood, but am the odd one out here as it's all my boys can think about. So today we put out all the decorations and set up the tree. We have the kind that you have to attach each color-coded branch individually. Do they even make these anymore? The tree box was too heavy for me to bring up from the basement so the boys made a chain-gang line up the stairs and brought each branch. I think Gray found that the most fun. I found that putting them to work is quite useful!

And then I had my first taste of what it's like when the lights won't work. I tested the first strand and... nothing. Then the next strand... nothing. Then I thought maybe I should try a different outlet. Same thing. So the next strand lit up the half end, but was dark the first half. I still strung it on the tree and made do with what was lit up. Then the next 5 strands all did not work. I am just not up for going to Target (is that possible?) and I'm even contemplating a Freecycle post "Wanted: WORKING Christmas lights, white or red preferred" but I am not even in the mood for that. So I guess I'll do the lights tomorrow. If I feel like it. In the meantime there's a small glob of white lights at the bottom of the tree. Not our best look, but at least I made the effort.

When the tree is all decorated and the house is all quiet and I have some John Denver Rocky Mountain Christmas music playing, it's one of my very favorite things.

  2. I feel your pain! I need to get all the stuff out of the attic, but that requires someone to climb up through the closet and hand down boxes one at a time. I am not up for that.
But oh (in dreamy voice) that Michael Buble singing Christmas songs! That'll help for sure.

  4. I put up our tree last night but only 'cuz I had people coming over today. It does feel good to be done and now I can just enjoy the next few weeks. You'll be glad you did it once it is over and you can site back and enjoy it while listening to John Denver. :)

  6. I have the same kind of tree. I want a new one so bad, but can't part with this color coded tree. I've had it since the 4th grade!

Last year, I threw it in a box with the lights still attached. It took me 2 minutes to get the tree up. It was wonderful.

Now? I don't feel like decorating it. JC made his own paper chain for it so far. I think I might let him decorate it with his creations this year!

  7. Oh, I have been in this mood before! (Depends on the year) I remember the year we decorated the entire tree and a week later a strand of lights went out. That was a pain!

And our tree uses LETTERS instead of colors. :)

  8. I kept thinking I'd get into the mood, too, but I couldn't. The kids insisted, and I basically sat on the couch while they did the whole thing.

We got a tree a couple years ago that is pre-lit, since putting the lights on a tree makes me itch. Hate it.

  10. Bravo to you for going for the decorating even without being in the mood. I am hard pressed to do anything Christmas related prior to Dec. 1. We will start small with our winter nature table and hopefully work our way towards having our tree up by mid-December. I am one of those grinches who thinks Christmas has turned into a part time job (but you pay $$$ out instead of bring money in for all the effort expended!) and I am just trying to simplify, if that is even possible with a young child in the house. There has just got to be a way to do it without the stress and consumerism, I just haven't figured out how to celebrate that way though. Old habits die hard, I guess.

Good luck with the lights! I always make Bob do the lighting because I have no patience for it (grinch attitude at work, lol).

  11. I remember the color-coded branches, that's what we had when I was a kid.

Your post reminds me of one of my family's most favorite Christmas songs, The Twelve Pains of Christmas. "The second thing at Christmas that's such a pain to me, rigging up the lights, and finding a Christmas tree." (to the tune of 12 Days of Christmas, of course).

But don't worry about your mood. It's not even December yet, so you're still allowed to not feel up to it yet. ;)

  12. Yay! Your blog is cooperating now. I am dreading this process this year for some reason. Sigh...

  13. I have the dread too this year for some reason...I still have my pumpkins outside. I hope to decorate this Saturday. I too have the letter branches Lori. I guess we are putting up 2 trees...Ho Ho Ho...I'll have to find my John Denver christmas and listen too.

  14. We have that same type of tree... I want a tree you just pull out of the box, shake and the limbs fall into place and the lights are already on!!! I am lazy, aren't I?!

  15. We'll probably be getting our tree on December 22nd. We go out to my uncle's farm and cut one down in the bush and then haul it home and shake any squirrels and owls out. Then it stays up until Epiphany.

  17. I found you through blogrush! Love the blog and I feel your not-in-the-mood-for-Chirstmas-decorating dilema pain. Thank goodness for the kids enthusiasm or I would never get around to it!!

  18. I think I'll be the last person to decorate again this year. It didn't happen until Dec. 20th last year. I am hoping Dec. 6th is the day this time. I can't wait to pick out my Alpine Fir.

  19. Hi Steph,

Long time, no visit. But I have to jump in on this post because I could have written it.

I always, always put the tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving. This year, I couldn't face it. Putting the tree up involves rearrainging all the furniture in the living room - the tree has to go in the front bay window of course and I was just too tired to move all that furniture.

So next weekend! And the lights are Rob's job. I totally just leave the room because if they don't work, I do NOT want to know. How very frustrating that is.

Last year we put 1,000 white lights on our tree, which, by the way, is like yours, with the color coded branches. It was like living inside the sun, very Christmas Vacation. As a matter of fact, we called Rob "Clark" all through the holidays. This year, we're scaling back to a mere 500 and I need every last light to work. LOL

  20. Maybe you could get one of those trees that already have lights on them. We had one of those color coded trees for almost 30 years until we moved to this house. We keep the "new" tree (no more color coding it opens like an umbrella) assembled in our basement and bring it up to decorate each Christmas and I still put on lights. I haven't felt like decorating it this year yet.

  21. OH I LOVE Christmas decorating!! We have to buy a new tree this year. I think we'll light up the palm tree in our front yard.

Maybe you should get a pre-lit tree?

  22. We take forever to get the decorating done. First of all, I don't start it til the second week in Dec. I need the time to wind down from Thanksgiving and wind up for Christmas. But I keep it simple, it's not worth the frazzles when we are supposed to be enjoying this holiday.

I always kept everything up til the kids had been back to school for a few days. Partly because it's depressing to be back in school and they can come home and feel there's still a little bit of the feeling of Christmas left, but partly because I dislike the work of taking it down and packing away as much as I dislike getting it all up.!

  23. LOL - I hate putting the tree together with the color coded branches. Thankfully, my kids love it, so I leave them to it. :)

  24. Oh, now you have me worrying about the lights! LOL We always put our tree up the day after Thanksgiving but we haven't had a chance yet (I blah-ged about it). Maybe we'll do that today! :D

Last year none of the my lights would work. All four strands died at the same time so I had to make an emergency run to Walmart (no Target in my town!).

Wish me luck... and I hope your tree is decorated now. :) And I have totally have to track down some John Denver Christmas music.
