Babywearing Tip Of The Week: When & Where...

It seems with Gray turning two this weekend I'd be wearing him less and less, which is partly true. He wants to run around and have his freedom, but he also still benefits from being worn close to Mama. This past week he has been overcoming croup and an ear infection, and at one point last night just about had a melt down. I needed to finish making dinner, so I put him in the mei tai on my back and he calmed quickly, resting his head on my back as I finished what I had to tend to. This is the type of magical moment many babywearing Moms have testified about. When you just can't put something off, but must also tend to baby at the same time.

Of course there are still plenty of times I try the sling and that's not what he wants, but I'd say more often than not, the sling does the trick.

Here's my top 5 places and times I wear Gray as a toddler:

1. Going to the park- I'll always bring the mei tai for our park playdates in case he needs to nurse (usually much more convenient and discreet for us this way), needs to nap, or in case he needs to be confined (this happens often at the park with other little ones he has to share with!)

2. Church- I always have the sling handy in case he's asleep in the car when we get to church. This way I can keep him with me and hopefully he can continue his nap while worn in the sling or mei tai. Lately, if he's awake, he's enjoyed the church nursery and last time didn't want to leave when church was over! (What a blessing!)

3. Shopping- whether it be grocery shopping or at the mall, I always am sure to bring along the sling. Gray starts out riding in the cart (unless he's asleep then we do like #2 above) and then if he tries to climb out or needs to nurse, I can just put him in the sling and then finish my shopping with no further inconveniences.

4. Home- As described above- the meltdown times, sick times, or just times baby wants to be held close. The sling can save your sanity!

5. "No-No" times & places- for those quick visits to stores or someone's home that you just don't want your little one breaking something or harming himself. For example- Barnes & Noble is ok to roam, however the salon while big brother gets a hair cut is more of a sling time & place. Dropping off something at your Aunt Mabel's with her Hummel collection on full display- also a "No-No."

Also, for any quick trip that you think you could just leave your little one in the car while you run in to pay for gas or pick up the pizza, it takes just a few seconds to get them in and out of the sling. NEVER leave your child in the car unattended. EVER.

So, what is your number one time & place to wear your baby or toddler?

  1. What a wonderful testimony for wearing a toddler! I feel like I haven't worn my son in forever...I think it's been about 11 months or so - once I got too pregnant. I miss it, but he's so independent now and he loves to walk everywhere, endlessly it's sad that I have no more need. And wonderful to have a new baby to wear constantly. I wear her on walks, trips to the park or when I want to get house work done. I still leave her in the car seat carrier if she falls asleep there but now that she's 12 and a half pounds it might be easier to try to transfer her and wear her into more places.

  2. My best friend is making me a My Tie (spelling?) back carrier - with Chicago Cubs design. :) Since my "baby" is 14 months old, some people think its funny to be getting it now when he's walking. Whatever!! I still use my sling almost daily. I hope to put him on my back while cooking, going to the forest perserve, zoo, etc.

  3. The Ellaroo Mei Tai works wonders for Jonah wherever we are. The first place I used it was the Popcorn Festival, where he slept so soundly. It was a beautiful thing to have him so close and so at peace. I also try to use it on walks when he is upset (mostly due to teething lately). I love how comfortable the Mei Tai is, and I get so many compliments by people interested in it! When that happens, I forward them to your site for more info! Of course, sometimes Jonah doesn't like to be in the Mei Tai or my new, amazingly beautiful Nest Sling, then I just carry him like usual (which really hurts my back after awhile...;-/). Either way, I love my Ellaroo and Nest Sling, I can't imagine the day when he is going to be too big to be carrying him like that anymore.

  4. The most interesting place we recently wore our 15 month old was at my DH's sister's wedding. It was on a beach down 100 steps. It was naptime and so DH wore Shelby in the Ergo. She slept through the whole ceremony! I still take my sling everywhere because who knows when I'll need it! :)

  6. Love your post, Steph. :)
The place we most often where Brennan is Church. Like you-he is usually ready to fall asleep as we drive there, so I transfer him to the sling. (my Hotsling) It rarely lasts, though. He needs to nurse, and I use the ladies room, because I can't get nursing in the sling down pat yet. :(

For parks and trips to the grocery store, we use out wrap. I love wearing him in the wrap while shopping! I hope to have a mei tai sooner than later, and we'll prob. use that for than the wrap.

Question for ya-does it take less time to get the MT on than the wrap?

  7. I love to wear my 2 year old when she is a little moody. It calms her right down and I can keep doing whatever I was doing before.

Walking around a festival or something is also wonderful with her on my back!

  8. Fantastic! I didn't wear with my oldest (I didn't know what wearing was) and I feel that I don't do it enough with my youngest. You are an inspiration!

    New contest up BTW!

  10. Thanks for sharing! My son is 14 months...and I'm nowhere close to ready to stop wearing him!! My favorite place? oooh, that's a tough one. I think church might be my favorite place though because since my hubby is the youth pastor, EVERYONE knows and and EVERY. ONE. thinks they need to come and see Tate and hold him. Sooo, to keep him away from all germies and groping people (who really do mean well, but it is too much sometimes!) I wear him...and he loves it as much as I do!! :)

  11. Like you said, I think it's great while shopping. Also, when we go for family walks. We don't want to bring two strollers. So, when his brothers both want to ride in the double stroller, I just put Ethan in the sling and everyone is happy.

  12. I think a sling is essential for vacuuming. I'd never get it done otherwise. That and shopping or just walking. And, of course, for comfort.

  13. I have been wearing my daughter to do grocery shopping the most. That way I can control the other children better. We are going to the apple farm next weekend and I am looking forward to trying it there.

  14. I use the sling most times at church to hold my niece who will be one any day now. She is usually due for a nap during service and the sling gets her to sleep.

I also use the mei tai and sling for walks and shopping. I always have one with me. My older niece who is 3 enjoys choosing which one she wants to ride in.

  17. What a great post! I'm glad that you can still wear Gray. Zachary is too darn heavy for me and I started having shoulder issues. But, it was fun while it lasted!! My favorite place to wear him was at church. I could hold him with no hands...and still worship!

And the other thing I wanted to mention is that Zachary is a little monster, running around out of control these days. The sling is a way to keep him under control and out of trouble. he..he..

  20. Omg, is there really an Aunt Mabel? he he

Of the many, many places I love to sling, a biggie is in the airport and on the plane. Discreet nursing, and he's close to me (and away from germs).

  21. I agree with all those places! The heavier Kolby gets, the more reluctant I am to put him in the sling. He is up to 30 lbs. but it is still so nice to have the option! And I still wear him in the Ergo around the house often, he requests it! He will be whiny while i am fixing dinner or needing to wash dishes and I say do you want to get in the Ergo and he nods his little (okay, large) head yes! I love that he loves it.

  22. I just got a bECO (soft-structured carrier) for my 22 lb 14mo. The biggest place I wear baby is at home while trying to do housework. So much of the time he still wants to be held and is so curious about what I'm doing.
I love my pouch or sling for quick trips in a store w/out a cart or as a back up for the stroller when we are out on the boardwalk.

If I had a dollar for everytime I saw a parent holding a baby or toddler while pushing a stroller...

  23. What a great article. My LO is almost 3 and I still wear him. Most often when I take him shopping. Also the one place I never go without a carrier is the Airport!

  24. I always throw Popeye in the wrap or sling for the stores..so much easier than lugging around that huge carseat!

  25. My favorite places to wear my baby is "fieldtrip" we go on that requires walking or touching things not suited for babies/young children (such as our trip to an alpaca farm). I hate having to push strollers through stores so that is also another top choice.
