All Shapes & Sizes

Grayson really is our peanut. I hear comments all the time about how small he is and most people think he's younger than 9 months old. Every single time we go for his check-ups at the doctor, he'll be weighed and get his height and head measured. Then a minute or so later the nurse will come back in and say, "let me measure that head one more time... to be sure." This last time I just jumped in when they measured him the first time and said, yes he has a small head! He is in the 3rd percentile in head size!

If you see him in person, he really is the cutest little peanut and proportionate & all. He just runs small! We all come in many shapes and sizes.

I decided to go back in my other boys' baby books and check their head sizes. Wow! Gray's head right now at 9 months old is 16.8 inches. Carter's head AT BIRTH was 15 inches. Don't forget, Carter has always been big (born 9 lbs 12 oz and Gray was just 7 lbs 5 oz at birth.) And Noah, born 7 lbs 7 oz, and even though he is my oldest, is growing normally and right there in the middle. I think they are all three just perfect the way they are.

  3. He is so Charmin squeezable!! As for those "percentiles"? They are loosley based on formula-fed babes. They haven't been recalculated to accomodate for breastfed babes, since the chart was "formula"ted in the late 70's. Or so I was told by a LLLLeader. Me? "Breast is Best" fanantic? nnoooo.... Back to Grayson, after my rambling, I think he looks absolutely perfect. Our little "peanut" has been rocking the scales at 24 pounds since she was 16 months old. She's almost 2 & 1/2 now & still holding steady. Whenever she go to the Doc's the RN asks her to get on the scale to weigh & Sophia pops off with "I weigh twenny-fo pounds!"

  4. Yep, I have two that give the doctors double-takes on the growth charts. My DD, although of average height, is very fine-boned so that she didn't register on the weight charts until she was three years old. Even now she barely hits the 5% mark (she's hovering just below 30 pounds at 4 years old). I find myself explaining over and over to docs that she's built like my MIL, who weighed less than 100 pounds at 9 months pregnant. But they still like to do bloodwork on her "just to be safe."

My youngest, on the other hand, falls on the opposite end of the chart with head size. He's exactly average height and a little above-average weight . . . and then his head size blows right off the chart. He's been this way since birth--my midwife said she'd only ever seen one head larger than his in all her years of delivering babies. You've seen his pictures on my blog, does he look strange to you? We're going in every three months to keep tabs on his head size, but I can't imagine what could be wrong with him at this point in the game.

I think your little guy looks just perfect. They do come in all shapes and sizes.

  5. No need to worry there. He'll catch up in due time. What's important is he doesn't have any abnormalities.

    Btw, he looks very adorable.

  6. how much does he weigh? He's a cutie! My baby is 7 months weighing in at 15.8 pounds, and she's 27 inches long. I think she's big, but people comment ALL THE TIME about how small she is! That's why I've changed her blog name to theBean!

  7. oh, and tanyetta- I will definatly be carrying theBean in a sling when she's a toddler! It's so much easier that way! You don't have to worry about them running away in the store, and you don't have to worry about stepping away from a shopping cart!

  15. What a cutie! And what a blessing that we truly see our children as perfectly made... just like God sees all of us. I remember a point in my pregnancy that I didn't care what my baby looked like, I just wanted to meet him or her. Who cares if my baby had 9 fingers instead of 10. I just wanted to kiss that little face!!!

And thank you for sharing about your son's epilespy. What a wonderful testimony you have to share. God certainly does bring good out of every situation, doesn't He!?

  16. Love your site!

I have a little peanut too, although my boys both have large heads. My youngest just turned one and has a 90th%ile head and is off the charts low on weight at 17 lb 12oz!

  18. I found your blog today and like it very much!!!

My daughter is small too... She's 11 months and weights 14 pounds. She was born small, weighting less than 4 pounds. The first months were a war between me and the doctors, as they wanted me to give her formula and I wanted to breastfeed.

She is fine, all beautifull and smart! And still nurses happily. She eats solids very well and that didn't upgrade her weight gain....

And I now love that she is little: a lot easier to carry her on the sling all day long!! =)

    kisses from Brazil!
